Why does the job exist?
The purpose of this position is to protect and restore New Mexico's groundwater resources for the benefit of all citizens. This position serves as a highly specialized technical position that oversees groundwater discharge permitting of complex federal industrial facilities (Los Alamos National Laboratory, WIPP, and New Mexico Air Force Bases throughout the state) as well as compliance and enforcement actions of permitted industrial facilities to ensure that citizens are provided with a sustainable supply of clean, uncontaminated water for drinking and other beneficial uses.
How does it get done?
• Administer New Mexico's Ground Water Rules
• Review and approve technical reports such as discharge permit applications and corrective action plans
• Draft permits
• Inspect facilities
• Oversee corrective actions and abatement
• Prepare testimony and serve as a lead specialist and expert witness for NMED in public hearings and meetings regarding water quality issues related to discharge permits for industrial facilities
• Lead bureau actions on highly contentious water resource impacts

Minimum Qualification
Bachelor's degree in Agriculture Science, Hydrology, Geology, Environmental Science, Water Resources, Watershed Management, Physics, Natural Science, Physical Science, Life Science, Biology, Chemistry, Geography, Forestry/Forest Science, Conservation Science, Wildlife Science, Emergency Management, or Engineering and six (6) years of relevant experience. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling ten (10) years may substitute for the required education and experience.
Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, bending and reaching may be required. In-state travel, including some overnight travel is required. Outdoor field work is required in all types of weather conditions.
