Position: Staff Water Resource Modeler
Description
The Opportunity
Ulteig is seeking qualified candidates for a Staff Modeler position within the Transportation & Water Team. The Staff Modeler is responsible for supporting the development and application of water resources model applications for simulating hydrology, sediment, and water quality across both urban and natural water systems. This individual will work closely with our experienced team of engineers, scientists, planners, and software developers to apply models that support our client's program needs in the areas of regional planning, regulatory compliance, reporting and tracking, alternative scenario assessment, and climate change and resiliency analyses.
What You'll Do
• Develops and applies hydrologic, hydraulic, and water quality models to simulate watershed processes and water systems
• Uses modeling tools such as SWMM, HSPF, LSPC, CE-QUAL-W2, SWAT, and MODFLOW, or similar software
• Collects, processes, and interprets hydrologic, climatic, land use, and water quality data for model input and calibration
• Analyzes surface water and groundwater flow, runoff, sediment transport, and pollutant loading data
• Calibrates and validates models using observed data to ensure reliability
• Conducts scenario analyses to evaluate the impacts of land use change, climate variability, or infrastructure improvements on water systems
• Prepares technical reports, maps, and visualizations to communicate model results to stakeholders and decision-makers
• Collaborates with engineers, scientists, planners, and public agencies to integrate modeling results into broader water resource management strategies
• Stays current with modeling best practices, advancements in modeling tools and techniques, and regulatory requirements
What We Expect from You
• Graduate degree in engineering or science with an emphasis on hydrology, modeling, analytical approach development, and GIS
• A solid understanding of basic hydrology, sediment, and water quality principles
• Experience with at least one common hydrology, hydraulic, sediment transport, and/or water quality models model application (e.g., LSPC, SWMM, HSPF, CE-QUAL-W2, and SWAT)
• Experience with stormwater best management practice modeling
• Experience with programming in Python or R
• Experience with machine learning and/or optimization techniques a plus
• Experience with compiled programming languages (e.g., C, C++, C#) or demonstrated ability to update and maintain model code a plus
• Experience in Microsoft Software Applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
• Ability to prioritize and multi-task under strict deadlines
• Must be comfortable working in a highly collaborative team environment
• Demonstrated initiative and drive to succeed with new and challenging tasks
• Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, management, public and external agencies
• Must have authorization to work permanently in the U.S.
