Job Description

The Calgary Board of Education is seeking a Waste and Recycling Coordinator (Hybrid) to manage waste reduction and recycling programs. This role involves overseeing contracts, evaluating service delivery, and promoting sustainability within the school board. The position offers flexible work options, allowing for remote work up to three days a week, with at least two days required in the office. The salary ranges from $35.60 to $45.12 per hour.

What does this role look like?

The CBE understands the future of work is flexible. In this role, you are eligible to participate in a flexible work program that allows you to work remotely for up to three days a week. A minimum of two days must be in the office. At certain times, you maybe be required to work in the office more then 2 days per week based on operational requirements.

Position Description

purpose

The purpose of this position is to guide the CBE towards reducing their overall ecological footprint by focusing on improvement of waste management within the school board and to provide technical, operational and advisory services related to waste reduction, recycling, diversion and management to all the key stakeholders of the Calgary Board of Education.

accountability

Accountable to the Manager, Energy & Environmental Services and to the Community Engagement Coordinator, Energy & Environmental Services, this position is responsible for the development, promotion, implementation and management of waste reduction, recycling and diversion programs; management of waste hauling contracts; coordinating educational and promotional programs and materials and to perform other related duties as required.

Note: Aggressive waste reduction goals have been assigned to this position as a measure of performance success.

major responsibilities

Manage current contracts and negotiate future contracts
• Manage current waste and recycling contracts between the CBE and private waste and recycling haulers, including evaluating contracts for efficiency in service and cost.
• Coordinate and manage the evolution of individual school recycling contracts to a centrally negotiated recycling contract.
• Monitor, evaluate and report on the efficiency and effectiveness of service delivery methods and procedures.
• Research, analyze, and evaluate new service delivery methods, procedures and techniques.
• Maintain statistical data on the school board’s waste and recycling activity such as number of bins, number of pick-ups, number materials diverted, amounts of materials recycled, percentage of waste reduced.
• Develop a database and a method of gathering inputs to provide a survey or status report on the waste management systems and to monitor and report waste reduction.

Be the instigator and resource for waste management programs throughout the school board and promote waste reduction and diversion in all activities.
• Plan, develop, promote, implement and evaluate waste management, waste reduction and recycling programs for all CBE schools and facilities as outlined in the Waste Management Strategy 5 year plan.
• Provide expertise and act as a resource to all CBE staff and students with respect to waste management, reduction, and diversion.
• Develop and deliver education, communication and promotional programs and materials with respect to waste management, reduction, and diversion.

Work with others to reduce the CBE’s ecological footprint through waste management activities
• Work in partnership with the city of Calgary and other external stakeholders to ensure consistent and clear messaging and education, as well as endeavor to leverage services and infrastructure and support the city and stakeholders in their waste reduction pursuits.
• Stay ahead of new trends and innovations in the field of solid waste and recycling.
• Work in partnership with the Facilities and Environmental Services, Educational Support Services and school communities to increase waste reduction and management awareness and action.

Address waste programs and concerns in a prepared and professional manner
• Prepare written reports and letters.
• Conduct independent research and investigate the issues, trends and politics related to waste reduction, diversion and recycling programs.
• Actively participate in project management.
• Conduct themselves in an appropriate manner while performing duties in a student environment and working with school staff.
• Perform other related duties as required.

qualifications

Education and Experience
• A post-secondary diploma or undergraduate degree in a related field combined with three to five years related experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
• Knowledge of:
• Operational characteristics, services, and activities of solid waste and recycling programs.
• Regulations, by-laws, and best management practices relating to solid waste and recycling, and waste reduction services.
• Budgets and government.
• Ecological footprint calculations.
• Methods to analyze, measure and account for performance goals and targets for solid waste and recycling programs.
• CBE (or school board) policies and operational needs.
• Recycling and composting infrastructure and market opportunities within the city of Calgary and Alberta.

Demonstrated Skills and Competencies
• Ability to motivate, persuade and inspire people.
• Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, and ability to keep accurate records.
• Contract management and negotiation.
• Knowledge of modern office practices, methods, and computer systems and procedures, including word processing, spreadsheet and desktop publishing programs.
• Ability to operate programs and generate reports, publications, and letters independently.
• Demonstrated problem-solving skills.
• Self-motivation and the ability to work independently and in a team leadership position
• Good organizational and time management skills.
• Personal commitment to the goals of the CBE and the Environmental Stewardship initiative.
