Job Description
Davidson College seeks a Visiting Assistant Professor in Environmental Studies for a one-year position starting July 1, 2025. The role involves teaching an introductory Environmental Social Science course and other electives. Candidates should have expertise in environmental social science and a commitment to diversity in education. A doctoral degree by July 2025 is required, with an annual teaching load of five courses. The Department of Environmental Studies at Davidson College invites applications for a one-year position at the Visiting Assistant Professor level, with a start date of July 1, 2025. The primary teaching responsibility will be our introductory Environmental Social Science course, plus other courses in the professor’s area of expertise. The ideal candidate will demonstrate potential for excellence in interdisciplinary undergraduate education, will possess expertise in an area of environmental social science, and will convey expertise in quantitative, qualitative, and/or GIS methods through their teaching and scholarship. The successful candidate must have a strong commitment to teaching a diverse undergraduate population and continuing scholarly activity. We welcome candidates with doctoral degrees conferred by July 2025 in traditional social science disciplines, interdisciplinary environmental studies programs, public policy schools, or other related programs.
The annual teaching load is five courses, including the introductory Environmental Social Science, existing or newly developed elective courses in the successful candidate’s areas of expertise and interests, and a social science methodology course.

Applications must include (1) a concise cover letter with discrete sections describing the candidate’s approach to teaching and a brief overview of research, (2) a curriculum vitae that contains contact information for three references, and (3) a statement of the candidate’s potential capacity for excellence in teaching, research, and mentorship in a liberal arts context, as well as how their teaching, research, and mentorship can support Davidson’s institutional commitment to diversity and inclusion. The statement should include past experience or training in inclusive pedagogy or practices, how the candidate has implemented inclusive pedagogy in past teaching or mentoring (if applicable), and how the candidate would contribute to an inclusive learning environment at Davidson College. The initial screening of candidates will be based exclusively on this statement. Applications completed by 15 March 2025 will receive full consideration. Reference letters will be requested for selected candidates later in the search process.
