Position Purpose
The Vice Shift Leader works as part of a team along with the Process Operators and the Shift Leader in a continuous process manufacturing environment. The Vice Shift Leader works in process building along with the process operators and also has the ability to operate the Human Machine Interface (HMI). As a Vice Shift Leader, you will fill in for planned or unplanned absences for the Shift Leader. The expectations are to ensure a safe work environment while delivering the maximum production quantity and the highest product quality. This is done by monitoring the HMI and adjusting settings to ensure that products transfer efficiently through the processing stages. At the same time, you will be supporting the policies, goals and objectives of VDC. The Vice Shift Leader works closely with the Shift Leader and assists with supervising the Process Operators on shift. The Vice Shift Leader will report to the Production Manager.
Key Responsibilities
• Monitors the HMI interface to operate the equipment; understands regulations relating to process operations and works in a manner to ensure that these regulations are met.
• Always works in a safe manner, following VDC policies and procedures; handles corrosive chemicals and other dangerous and toxic products using the respective personal protective equipment as required.
• Demonstrates leadership and mentoring skills positively.
• Assists with the development of Process Operators.
• Performs small repairs on equipment; communicates directly with the maintenance department to coordinate repairs and maintenance requirements; assists maintenance employees and contractors as needed in performing maintenance and repairs.
• Takes routine field readings and monitors process equipment; diagnoses faults affecting facility conditions.
• Fill out a daily shift log report when required.
• Completion of work permits as required.
• Understand the process flow and equipment.
• Operation of pumps, valve orientation, connect/disconnect hoses to transfer products, chemicals or wastewater.
• Management of waste and rework material.
• Telehandler Operation, loading and unloading trucks and material handling.
• Monitoring and management of wastewater systems, sanitary and storm water systems.
• Carries out regular maintenance and housekeeping duties of the facility.
• In process sampling and testing.
• Coordinates and plans daily with the Terminal Supervisor with regards to loading/unloading and the receiving schedule.
• Adheres to Kosher practices.
• The ability to work as part of a team.
• The ability to work independently.
Qualifications
• High school diploma or GED is required.
• Previous telehandler, tow motor, or other lift experience is an asset.
• Must be able to wear standard PPE (hard hat, safety glasses, rain gear, steel toe boots), and qualify to wear a full-face respirator.
• Physical requirements include, but may not be limited to, walking up and down stairs/ladders, working at heights and carrying up to 50 pounds.
• Able to work rotating 12-hour shift schedules.
• Experience in operating Human Machine Interface (HMI) is an asset.
• Experience in leadership and supervisor position is an asset.
• Experience within the biodiesel or chemical industry is an asset.
• Demonstrated mechanical knowledge and ability.
• A working knowledge of computer software programs such as Microsoft Office and the Internet.
