Press Tab to Move to Skip to Content Link Select howoften (in days) to receive an alert: Managing Director, Environment& Sustainability Contract Length Four-year term, with thepotential for renewal for an additional four years Posting End Date14/05/2025 Purpose of Job The Managing Director (MD) is responsiblefor providing thought leadership and people leadership to theindependent second line function charged with ensuring that theBank delivers on its commitments to promote environmental andsustainable (E&S) development in all its activities asenunciated in the Articles Establishing the Bank (AEB) and on thestandards set out in the Environmental and Social Policy (ESP). TheMD is responsible for the periodic update of the ESP, for thecontinuous improvement of the EBRD’s E&S Framework andapplication of the associated E&S risk assessment methodologyas it relates to the Banks ESP. This important role includesresponsibility to mitigate and minimise to within risk tolerance asestablished within ESP, the reputational impacts of environmentaland social issues associated with the Bank’s investment activities,operations and Technical Cooperation activities. The role holder isexpected to catalyse new environmental and socialactivities/benefits and deliver policy dialogue with national andregional authorities, within our countries of operation in supportof the Bank’s objectives as they relate to environmental and socialissues. A key role of the ESD function is that of the 2nd line ofdefence (2LOD) in respect of managing the reputational risksarising from attribution of the Banks green and sustainabilitydesignations and results reporting. These include the ParisAlignment, the Green Economies in Transition (GET), related MRV(monitoring, reporting and verification), and E&S related datacollection, analysis and reporting. The role has responsibility toestablish and operate the Banks Management Grievance mechanismrelating to E&S related complaints directly submitted to BanksManagement. The role also includes co-operation on strategicinitiatives with other IFI’s such as mutual reliance, human rights,health and safety and environmental issues. Accountabilities &Responsibilities Overall leadership of and accountability for: -Developing and delivering the five-year policy frameworks forenvironmental and social issues under which the institutionoperates. - Developing and implementing appropriate businessprocess models for the team to deal with the diverse sector andgeographic complexities of investment projects. - Directing acomplex range of functions/ technical expertise for projectappraisal and oversight. - ESD’s input to the Bank’s GET approach,aligned to the Bank’s overall strategy and second line of defencerole including Paris Alignment. - Responsible for the engagementand effective overall management of people, including attraction,performance management, coaching and development. Active role instrategic talent and workforce planning. - Provide leadership andvision to the department and is responsible for educating andaligning individuals in the team with the Bank’s work, decisions,and objectives. - Inform the Board on high-risk issues so thatcomplex technical information can be communicated which can berelied upon. - Protect the Institution from major reputationaldamage, while allowing the Bank to work on complex challengingprojects, in collaboration with IPAM and CSG Units (VP3). - Managethe prime interface role between Management and the IPAM function(which reports to the Board). - Manage the financial and diversetechnical resources of ESD so that an effective support/compliancefunction can operate in tandem. - Incubate new activities such asclimate change adaptation/road safety which can be used to developnew banking products and enhance transition. - Carry out high levelproblem solving on unique high risk challenging projects anddetermine the optimal outcome using professional judgement andexperience. - Provide effective leadership in the development ofbest practice in reviewing gaps and providing solutions. - Lead byexample and promote a partnership approach to ensure effectiveco-operation, collaboration and working relationships between ESDand other departments in the Bank. Maintain external networks toensure that EBRD is aligned with the market practice. - As a memberof the Bank’s Senior Leadership Group (SLG), champion and rolemodel the Bank’s Workplace Behaviours, ensuring adherence withinthe department so that the highest standards of integrity andethical conduct are exhibited at all times. - As a SLG member,contributes effectively in shaping the Bank’s strategy and engagein wider Bank initiatives. Qualifications & Skills / Experience& Knowledge - Extensive practical project-based experience -gained either in another IFI, commercial sector or ideally, throughthe combination of both - of environmental and social issues in allthe sectors in which the Bank invests or is involved in. - Strongacademic background in environmental and/or social sciences. -Experienced people manager with demonstrable skill in fosteringteam collaboration, cohesion, and talent development. - Proventrack record of formulating strategy and policy objectives andimplementing them successfully. - Proven track record ofsuccessfully directing and delivering large complex programmes andprojects. - Experience implementing and embedding change andcommitment to continuous improvement. - Knowledge of operations andchallenges in regions where the EBRD is expanding its remit. -Demonstrated ability to engage in setting the strategic directionof the organisation and implement on a geographically dispersedlevel. - Proven ability to effectively communicate complextechnical environmental and/or social issues to a wide range ofinternal (Board, Excom, IPAM etc) and external stakeholders (CSOs,media, capitals etc). - Ability to devise creative solutions toproblem solving on projects and policy and exercise professionaljudgement, based on extensive practical experience. - Strongdemonstrated partnership skills with a variety of stakeholders toenable positive engagement with teams throughout the Bank andcontribute to the cohesiveness of the Bank's senior management. -Excellent leadership, management and communication skills combinedwith a proven ability to motivate professionals to deliver businessobjectives effectively in a multi-cultural, results orientedorganisation.
