Job Description

The Student Conservation Association is hiring Ecological Restoration Crew Members for hands-on field work in Northeast Ohio. Responsibilities include habitat management, herbicide application, planting native species, and invasive vegetation control. The position requires physical activity and teamwork under site managers. Training is provided, and members must attend mandatory training in Kent, OH. Applicants must be at least 18 years old, have a valid driver's license, and be able to handle outdoor work conditions.
Position Summary

SCA crew members will complete hands-on field work under the direction of Ecological Restoration Site Managers with Davey Resource Group at a variety of client sites across northeast Ohio and the region. Members will work in small teams to inspect, manage, and maintain a wide range of habitats, both natural and disturbed. Daily tasks include herbicide application, native seed installation, native plug planting, tree / shrub installation, invasive vegetation control (IVC), and other tasks related to habitat restoration. Regular handling of herbicides is required and training on how to safely handle herbicides will be provided by DRG.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

The Student Conservation Association (SCA), America's #1 conservation service organization, seeks qualified applicants to maintain a wide range of habitats in Northeast Ohio with DAVEY RESOURCE GROUP, Inc., in SCA's DAVEY Ecological Restoration cohort.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

SCA crew members will complete hands-on field work under the direction of Ecological Restoration Site Managers as well as Project Managers with Davey Resource Group to provide clients with the services and solutions needed to efficiently manage natural resources, comply with policies, and obtain regulatory permits. Members will inspect, manage, and maintain a wide range of habitats, both natural and disturbed. Daily tasks include herbicide application, native seed installation, native plug planting, tree / shrub installation, invasive vegetation control (IVC), and other tasks related to habitat restoration. Members will receive on the job training in hand and power tool use, herbicide application, and gain exposure to careers working for contracting agencies such as DRG. Members may also have the opportunity to participate in environmental education and professional development workshops/trainings, as well as travel for special projects across the state.

Project Work Summary: Various IVC techniques, including physically strenuous backpack spraying; Plant ID, native seeding; native planting (live stakes, container plants); possibly stream seeding/matting before or after IVC season; Safety Tailgates/Topics; small equipment operation

Marginal Duties

Attend mandatory paid training with DRG in Kent, OH from May 19th-23rd, 2025. Training schedule is 8am-3pm daily. Hotel will be provided for team members based out of the Columbus office for the duration of training.

Required Qualifications

Must be 18 yrs or older; have a valid driver's license for 3+ years and clean driving record; Current ability to meet SCA's criminal back-ground check standards; ability to lift up to 50 lbs; ability to tolerate adverse weather conditions and be active on your feet over uneven terrain while carrying a 35-lb backpack for up to 8 hrs/day; outdoor skills and experience hiking in varying terrain and weather conditions; ability to maintain a safe, productive, and enjoyable work environment; Ability to adapt as schedule may change based on weather and project requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

Plant iden-tification skills and knowledge of midwestern ecology is a plus; Hand and power tool experience also a plus!

Compensation

$18/hr for up to 40 hrs/week, $27/hr for occasional optional overtime (no more than 5 additional hours/week).

Crew members should anticipate an average of 35 hrs/week of work. Some work may be offered on Saturdays, but is not mandatory.

All allowances are subject to applicable federal, state, and local taxes.
