The Brownsville Wellness Coalition is seeking an Urban Farmer to manage agricultural operations across multiple urban farms in Brownsville, TX. Responsibilities include overseeing daily farm activities, implementing sustainable practices, engaging with the community, and managing crop production. The role requires hands-on expertise in urban farming and a commitment to sustainability and community education. A high school diploma is required, with preference for candidates with relevant degrees and experience.

About the Brownsville Wellness Coalition:
The Brownsville Wellness Coalition (BWC) is a 501(c)3 organization serving Brownsville, Texas. Its mission is to cultivate healthy foods and lifestyles. Through its programs, the Community Gardens, Urban Farms, the Farmers Market, the Fresco Mobile Market, and La Cocina Alegre, BWC supports local food production, educates the public, and provides access to affordable, nutritious food.
POSITION SUMMARY:
We are seeking a passionate and skilled Urban Farmer to join our team to oversee and manage agricultural operations at multiple urban farms located throughout the city of Brownsville. The successful candidate will be responsible for producing high-quality fruits and vegetables, managing farm operations, and supporting the local community by providing access to fresh, sustainable produce. This position requires a hands-on individual with expertise in urban farming, as well as a dedication to environmental sustainability and community engagement.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Farm Management:
o Oversee the daily operations of BWC urban farms located in different areas of Brownsville.
o Plan, plant, cultivate, and harvest a variety of fruits, vegetables, and herbs based on seasonality and community needs.
o Implement sustainable farming practices, including water conservation, composting, and integrated pest management.
o Ensure farm sites are maintained in a clean and organized manner, including all equipment and infrastructure.
Crop Production & Planning:
o Develop annual crop plans that align with the climate, local soil conditions, and nutritional needs of the community.
o Maintain a rotation of crops to ensure soil health and maximize yield.
o Ensure organic farming standards are adhered to, and promote regenerative practices.
Community Engagement & Education:
o Engage with the local community to promote the benefits of fresh, local produce and healthy eating.
o Provide educational programs and workshops on farming, nutrition, and sustainable agriculture practices to community members, school groups, and volunteers.
o Coordinate volunteer days, farm tours, and community events at farm sites.
Harvesting & Distribution:
o Manage harvesting schedules and ensure produce is distributed to local food pantries, farmers markets, or community-supported agriculture (CSA) programs.
o Collaborate with the Brownsville Wellness Coalition to ensure the produce reaches the most underserved populations in Brownsville.
Recordkeeping & Reporting:
o Maintain detailed records of crop production, inventory, and farm activities.
o Track yields and make recommendations for improvements to maximize efficiency and output.
o Submit regular reports to the Brownsville Wellness Coalition’s leadership team regarding farm progress, challenges, and successes.
Team Collaboration & Supervision:
o Supervise farm assistants, interns, and volunteers, providing guidance and training on sustainable farming practices.
o Collaborate with other members of the Brownsville Wellness Coalition to coordinate events, programs, and outreach activities.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education & Experience:
o High school diploma required; a degree in Agriculture, Horticulture, Environmental Science, or a related field preferred.
o Minimum of 2 years of experience in farming, urban agriculture, or related field, with hands-on experience in crop production, farm management, and sustainable agriculture.
Skills & Abilities:
o Strong knowledge of sustainable farming practices, soil health, crop rotation, and pest management.
o Experience working with diverse communities, with an emphasis on education and engagement.
o Ability to work independently and as part of a team, managing multiple farm sites and projects.
o Comfortable working outdoors in various weather conditions and lifting heavy objects as needed.
o Excellent communication and organizational skills.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to work in varying weather conditions and perform physical tasks such as lifting, bending, and planting.
Ability to walk, stand, and perform manual labor for extended periods of time.
Exerts up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds frequently and/or up to 10 pounds regularly to move objects.
