Job Description

The Texas Department of Transportation seeks Transportation Engineers (I, II, III) in Atlanta, GA. Responsibilities include planning, project development, design, and compliance with laws. Engineers will analyze contract issues, assist with design and construction administration, and perform data evaluations. Minimum qualifications include a Bachelor's degree in engineering and relevant experience ranging from 4 to 6 years, depending on the level. A valid driver's license and professional engineering certification are required.
Essential Duties
Transportation Engineer I: Performs transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations and/or maintenance. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.


Transportation Engineer II: Performs complex transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations and/or maintenance. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.


Transportation Engineer III: Performs advanced and complex transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations and/or maintenance. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.


Responsibilities


Analyzes and assists in the resolution of contract problems and disputes.


Assists with design, computer operations and plan preparation.


May serve as a lead worker and the related tasks.


Reviews shop drawings, plans, specifications, estimates, supplemental agreements and change order requests.


Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.


Assists Area Engineers with construction contract administration matters.


Performs data collection, evaluations, analyses, studies, inspections, forecasts, assessments, and/or plan development.


Minimum Qualifications
Education: Bachelor's Degree in engineering or related science. A higher degree accepted by TX PELS.


Experience:


Transportation Engineer I: 4 years engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience.


Transportation Engineer II: 5 years engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience.


Transportation Engineer III: 6 years engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience.


Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent. Related graduate level education may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis.


Licenses and Certifications


Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.


Licensed Professional Engineer.


Professional engineers licensed in another state in the United States, but not currently licensed in Texas, must meet the Texas Engineering Practices Act requirements, obtain a Texas license within six months of hire, and sign an agreement as a condition of employment.

Hydrologic, hydraulic and geotechnical design activities and principles.


Applicable plans, specifications and estimates preparation, review, processing and compliance requirements.


Construction engineering policies and procedures.


Applicable engineering workstations and applications to support efficient planning and design activities.


Design and plan preparation methods and requirements.


Skill in


Performing calculations to include material and labor estimates, expenses, technical survey data and engineering.


Monitoring the status and progress of projects.


Leading, assigning, reviewing, and monitoring the work of others.


Other


Exercises logic and reasoning to define problems, establish facts and draw valid conclusions; makes decisions that support business objectives and goals.


Physical Requirements and Working Conditions


Subject to environmental conditions; protection from weather but not temperature changes.


Required to wear protective gear—respirator, hard hat, or other device.


Light work: Lift up to 20 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 10 lbs.


Close visual acuity—work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading.


Conditions of Employment


This job has been identified as physically demanding and will require a pre‑employment physical.


Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety‑impact positions. This is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing.


Please note that the Department of Transportation's Drug and Alcohol Testing Regulation - 49 CFR Part 40, at 40.151(e) - does not authorize “medical marijuana” under a state law to be a valid medical explanation for a positive drug test result for an employee in this position.

Salary Ranges


Transportation Engineer I, B24: $65,104.00 - $106,634.00 annually


Transportation Engineer II, B25: $69,572.00 - $114,099.00 annually


Transportation Engineer III, B26: $76,530.00 - $129,430.00 annually
