Position Overview

CASE seeks a qualified expert to collaborate as a key member of an interdisciplinary team at NOAA’s Northwest Fisheries Science Center (NWFSC) Point Adams Research Station to conduct advanced tidal analysis of hydrographic data to model critical salmon wetland habitats in the Pacific Northwest. The results will guide restoration strategies for wetlands and enhance ecosystem resilience to climate hazards. Note that this position can be perform fully remotely.

The role focuses on analyzing hydrographic data and leveraging cutting-edge technologies such as GIS and AI/ML to address critical challenges faced by species and habitats in the Pacific Northwest. Insights from this work will drive restoration strategies for wetlands, enhance ecosystem resilience to climate hazards, and support the conservation of Pacific salmon habitats.

Interested candidates should submit a resume/CV, cover letter, and supporting materials to APPLY NOW. Please include any examples of past projects and publications related to tidal modeling if available.

• Compute tidal statistics, including mean flow and flux estimates, and compare between different creek types.
• Quantify uncertainties in flow and flux estimates.
• Develop and recommend modeling approaches adaptable to varying tidal regimes.
• Prepare a detailed report outlining methods, results, and modeling recommendations for publication.

Deliverables
• Tidal Analysis Report: A comprehensive analysis of NOAA-provided ADCP data using a wavelet-based tidal analysis program for non-stationary processes. The report must include clear methods, results, and figures suitable for academic publication.
• Modeling Overview: A concise outline of modeling approaches for tidal flux estimates.

Qualifications
• Bachelor’s (BS), Master’s (MS), or Doctorate (PhD) in an environmental science-related field.
• Proven expertise in non-stationary tidal analysis.
• Extensive experience processing tidal and velocity datasets.
• In-depth knowledge of estuarine and tidal freshwater environments in the Pacific Northwest.
• Familiarity with advanced modeling frameworks for wetland hydrogeomorphic systems.
• Strong analytical skills, with expertise in statistical and geospatial tools (e.g., R, Python, R, Esri, MATLAB, etc.).
• Demonstrated ability to manage and execute complex research projects.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills for technical and non-technical audiences.

Preferred Skills
• Deep understanding of the implications of climate change on salmon populations and related ecosystems in the Pacific Northwest.
• Knowledge of environmental regulations and policies related to threatened and endangered species (ESA, MMPA, NEPA).
• Experience working in interdisciplinary teams or contributing to collaborative research projects.
• Proven track record of publications or contributions to peer-reviewed scientific journals.
