The Position
We are seeking an enthusiastic innovator to lead a small team that will assess, trial, evaluate and operationalise technology that improves field management of the Marine Parks and Island National Parks in the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area. You will work with field staff, marine park users and technology suppliers and developers to identify opportunities to improve efficacy, efficiency and safety through technology in field management activities, be able to assess the pros and cons of adopting such technology and be able to map out and support a pathway to adoption.
You will focus mainly on innovation and technologies that improve compliance management, for example vessel tracking systems, remotely operated vessels and drones and field reporting systems. However, you will work across other field management activities such as incident response and reef and island conservation actions.
You will ensure that technologies are integrated with data management and visualisation systems and tools. To achieve this, you will need to work closely with other people in the Reef Authority and Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service as well as external collaborators and providers, to match Reef Joint Field Management Program needs with innovation and technology solutions. You will further need to turn potential technologies into on ground action and operational delivery by working with a cross section of Reef Joint Field Management Program staff. You will be able to consider how technology can achieve improvements in safety for staff in the field.
Key Responsibilities
• Facilitate the identification, research, development, testing, and implementation of technology solutions to enhance the Reef Joint Field Management Program, focusing on ensuring legislative compliance.
• Generate comprehensive reports, analyses, cost estimates, and technology solutions and business systems recommendations.
• Lead change management efforts while adopting new technologies, including formulating necessary policies and procedures.
• Ensure the continuous functionality of technologies and business systems utilised within the Program, emphasising data integrity, effective data management, and user-friendly interfaces.
• Collaborate with the Reef Authority and Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service to navigate implementation, procurement, ownership, and licensing requirements for technology solutions.
• Foster strategic partnerships with relevant Commonwealth and Queensland government agencies, research institutions, the private sector, and reef industries to stay abreast of current needs and apply cutting-edge technology solutions to improve the Reef Joint Field Management Program.
• Provide technical advice and support the delivery of key initiatives, activities, and priority projects within the Program, or take responsibility for specific aspects of these projects as required.

Essential requirements
• An undergraduate qualification in relevant field.
Desirable qualifications or equivalent experience
• Experience in providing technical advice to decision-makers
• Experience in data analysis and business intelligence capabilities
• Experience in current technologies, systems and data management
• Understanding of or an ability to rapidly acquire an understanding of environmental compliance and marine and island protected area management.
