SY25-26 Environmental Education Naturalist

Savannah-Chatham County Schools seeks an Environmental Education Naturalist responsible for teaching outdoor science and environmental education programs to enhance students' environmental awareness. The role requires a bachelor's degree in natural sciences or related fields, experience in outdoor teaching, and excellent communication skills. Responsibilities include conducting educational programs, animal care, curriculum development, and event planning. The position is based in Savannah, GA, with a work calendar of 250 days.
PRIMARY FUNCTION: This position is responsible for teaching outdoor science and environmental education programs to encourage students’ awareness and appreciation of the environment and to broaden their knowledge of science concepts.

REPORTS TO: Director, Oatland Island Wildlife Center
SALARY SCHEDULE: G-10
WORK DAYS: 250

REQUIREMENTS:
• Bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university with major course work in the natural sciences or related field

Preferred: Bachelor's degree with a major in science or environmental education

Experience, Skill, and Certification: (Required)
• Experience in interpretation or teaching in an outdoor setting
• Experience with wildlife and domestic animal care
• Excellent oral and written communications skills
• Demonstrable organization and self-management skills

Experience, Skill and Certification (Preferred)
• Two years experience working with children in an outdoor setting

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

1. Conducts outdoor educational programs (in all weather conditions) for school children and adults on various science topics including the subjects of wetlands (salt and freshwater environments), natural history, animal behaviors and characteristics, environmental education awareness and issues.
2. Conducts programs for the public including Toddler Tuesday program.
3. Conducts off-site educational programs at schools, libraries, nursing homes, etc.
4. Assists with the responsibilities of animal care.
5. Helps develop programs and curriculum.
6. Assists with maintaining and updating teaching equipment and teaching tools.
7. Works extensively with summer camp program.
8. Helps plan and facilitate large, annual special events.
9. Coordinates resources, including volunteers, sponsors, supplies & materials, and databases.
10. Assists with light maintenance of building, trails, and habitats.
11. Performs other duties as necessary for the effectiveness of the organization.

Occasional Saturday work is required during Oatland’s special events

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
Incumbents will be considered “at will.” Appropriate pay will be determined based on the Grade as determined by Human Resources and allowable experience. The work calendar will be 250 days. Revised 07/18
