Job Description

Yale University seeks a Sustainable Waste and Repair Facility Supervisor in New Haven, CT. The role involves developing waste management and recycling strategies, overseeing a repair facility, managing teams, and ensuring compliance with safety and environmental regulations. The supervisor will collaborate with various stakeholders to enhance sustainability practices and improve operational efficiencies, while also leading awareness campaigns and managing repair requests and resources.
Essential Duties

SUSTAINABILITY WASTE MANAGEMENT: • Develop and execute comprehensive waste management, composting programs, and recycling strategies in alignment with the University's sustainability goals. • Support and expand upon existing waste reduction and diversion initiatives, including single-stream recycling, composting, and reuse programs, in close collaboration with the Office of Sustainability. • Evaluate waste streams to identify opportunities for improvement, cost savings, and increased efficiencies. Review environmental impacts of waste management practices and propose recommendations for innovative improvements in close collaboration with the Office of Sustainability. • Monitor waste and recycling data, prepare reports, and present key performance indicators to management in close collaboration with the Office of Sustainability. • Ensure waste and recycling data is consistent, comprehensive, and accurate, and identify opportunities to increase data collection efficiencies. • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to educate and train employees on proper waste sorting and recycling practices. • Collaborate with students, faculty, staff, and various campus departments to raise awareness and engagement in sustainable waste practices. Collaborate with community organizations and local authorities to promote sustainable waste management practices beyond the organization. • Support the annual student moveout donation collection program, which is led by the Office of Sustainability, by coordinating equipment and supplies, overseeing infrastructural logistics, and helping to ensure a well-organized moveout process with the Office of Sustainability, City of New Haven, and local partners. • Identify and establish partnerships with waste disposal vendors, recycling facilities, and sustainable technology providers, updating and managing contracts as needed, ensuring streamlined collections and consistent, accurate data. • Will lead the development and implementation of waste reduction and recycling awareness campaigns, ensuring messaging across all campuses is consistent and infrastructure exists to support all efforts. • Stay updated on relevant environmental regulations and ensure the organization's compliance with waste disposal laws.

REPAIR FACILITY MANAGEMENT: • Oversee the daily operations of the repair facility, managing repair requests, scheduling maintenance activities, and coordinating repair projects. • Collaborate with departments and stakeholders to assess repair needs, prioritize tasks, and allocate resources efficiently. • Supervise a team of repair mechanics, ensuring proper training, performance evaluation, and adherence to safety protocols. • Manage repair parts, tools, and equipment inventory levels and establish efficient procurement processes. • Develop and implement repair schedules to minimize downtime and ensure timely resolution of maintenance issues. • Ensure compliance with safety regulations, environmental standards, and university policies within the repair facility. • Coordinate with external vendors, contractors, and technical experts for specialized repairs or maintenance services. • Maintain a safe working environment by enforcing safety guidelines and regulations, conducting regular inspections, and addressing concerns promptly.

Position Focus:

The Sustainable Waste and Repair Facility Manager will lead waste management and recycling initiatives and manage the day-to-day operations of the repair facility. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in waste reduction, recycling processes, composting, and sustainable practices, and be results-driven. They will be responsible for developing and implementing strategies to minimize waste and promote recycling; ensuring efficient workflows; adhering to safety protocols and compliance with environmental regulations; and completing repairs in a timely fashion.

Required Skill/Ability 1:

Proven ability to supervise and coordinate daily grounds maintenance services. Demonstrated ability with waste management and recycling initiatives.

Required Skill/Ability 4:

Proven ability to maintain, manage and prepare scheduling, word processing, and spreadsheet documents and reports. Proficiency with software tools such as Microsoft Office, Word, Excel and database computer programs.

Required Skill/Ability 5:

Ability to work irregular hours (as the job mandates), including weekend athletic events, emergency response, and special events such as move-in, move-out, commissioning, start-ups, commencement, reunions, etc.
