The University of Maryland is seeking a Sustainable Transportation Assistant to support the Smart Commute and BikeUMD programs. The role involves operations, planning, and evaluation of sustainable transportation initiatives for the campus community. Candidates must be graduate students or College Park Scholars with strong research, communication, and organizational skills. The position offers hands-on experience in Transportation Demand Management and requires on-campus presence in College Park, MD.

The Sustainable Transportation Assistan t will support the operations, planning, and evaluation of the UMD Smart Commute program, BikeUMD program, and other DOTS Sustainability Team initiatives.
The UMD Smart Commute program works to engage, encourage, evaluate, and educate the campus community about sustainable transportation policies and programs. Sustainable modes of transportation in the purview of this program include but are not limited to: carshare, bikeshare, carpooling, public transit, biking, walking, electric vehicles, and teleworking to support our campus community of over 50,000 commuters on and off campus.
• *POSITION TERM:**
Seeking one graduate student or College Park Scholar student who is available for employment this Spring Semester with the option to continue into the Fall Semester.
• *POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
• Must be a graduate student or College Park Scholar student in good academic standing.
• Enthusiastic about sustainability and multimodal transportation . Knowledge and experience with bicycling and public transportation is a plus.
• Strong research and data analysis skills. Experience with Microsoft Excel a plus.
• Organized and attentive to detail.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Comfortable working both collaboratively and independently.
• Excellent time management and organizational abilities.
• Able to lift 30 lbs.
• Ideally possess a Maryland or other U.S. driver’s license.
• *WHAT YOU WILL GAIN:
• Direct experience in Transportation Demand Management (TDM) program evaluation, planning, and administration on a university campus.
• The opportunity to work with campus geospatial (GIS) mapping technology to track various sustainable transportation inventories on campus. No previous GIS experience is required.

• *RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:**
• *Customer Support and Engagement:
• Assist in monitoring, cataloguing, and responding to email, phone, and in-person inquiries that come in via the Smart Commute shared inbox, the front desk, and at public outreach events.
• Assist customers with enrollment in various Smart Commute and BikeUMD programs .
• Assist the BikeUMD team with the intake and proper storage for bicycle donations, lockers, and storage as needed.
• Assist the BikeUMD team with bike lock cutting services as needed (training provided).
• Assist the BikeUMD team with tagging abandoned and improperly parked bicycles, e-scooters, and other micromobility vehicles and impounding them if necessary.
• Monitoring and Evaluation:
• Conduct fieldwork and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) for various inventories in our units including, but not limited to, supplies, campus bike racks, micromobility hubs, electric vehicle charging stations, etc.
• Maintain and analyze various data sets from third-party vendors including: BRI Pre-Tax Commuter Benefits, Blink Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging, Carpool Permits, Capital Bikeshare, and Zipcar.
• *Programmatic Support:**
• Provide event planning, promotion, and staffing support for major engagement campaigns throughout the academic year which include:
• Back-to-school welcome and orientation events
• BikeUMD registration drives
• Health Benefits Fair
• International Park(ing) Day
• Car-Free Day
• October Safety Month
• Walktober Challenge
• Campus Bikeways network
• Creative placemaking initiatives
• International Coffee Hour
• #TryTransit Tours and group rides
• Good Morning Commuter Breakfasts
• Bike Week
• Earth Day, etc.
• Support, promote, and expand our department staff’s engagement with Green Workspace events and activities.
• Support with grant projects, research, and administrative tasks as assigned.
• *$16.50/hr; 10 - 15 hours/week (Spring/Fall 2026); Part-time
