Environmental Innovations, Inc. is seeking a Sustainability Consultant and Stormwater/Wastewater Inspector to support businesses in implementing sustainable practices and becoming Green Business Certified. The role involves outreach, technical assistance, and project management in Santa Cruz, San Benito, and Santa Clara Counties. Ideal candidates are organized, enthusiastic, and may need to travel. Proficiency in Chinese or Spanish is a plus. This position offers flexibility with a remote/field work option.

We offer steady and ongoing work for an enthusiastic and organized sustainability professional with sales, marketing, outreach, technical assistance, and project management experience. The primary role of the Sustainability Consultant is to help small and medium sized businesses throughout Santa Cruz, San Benito and Santa Clara Counties (and potentially other Bay Area municipalities) successfully implement environmental practices and become Green Business Certified under the California Green Business Network (CAGBN) standards and protocols. The job also entails Single Use Foodware Ordinance education, outreach, and technical assistance to assist food service businesses in replacing plastic foodware with compliant compostable and reusable options. The role may include outreach support for concurrent programs, such as energy conservation, business resilience and preparedness, and equity initiatives. The successful candidate will excel in the ability to effectively monitor project budgets and deliverables, skillfully communicate progress with clients, manage collaborative relationships with key partners, and engage with community organizations and other stakeholders.
The ideal centralized location for this position is in Watsonville but nearby locations for this remote/field position will be considered depending on qualifications provided candidates are willing to travel.
Key responsibilities include providing sustainability technical assistance to businesses, customer service and sales within the business community, data analysis and reporting, and organizing meetings, events, and marketing deliverables. Chinese or Spanish speaking is a strong consideration for this position.
The role focuses on a variety of environmental issues that impact the business community. Our work can range from stormwater education, solid waste compliance, Green Business technical assistance, energy programs, and different forms of outreach and education to help our local community take steps to make businesses more environmentally friendly examples for others to follow.
A significant portion of this position will be to support Green Business Programs throughout the Counties listed above. This program is a part of the larger California Green Business Network and helps small to medium-sized businesses achieve sustainability goals through various business practices. Key responsibilities include conducting outreach, organizing meetings and other events, providing sustainability technical assistance to businesses, customer service and program sales within the business community, data analysis and reporting, and social media and marketing. Spanish is a strong consideration for this position.
In an average week, the Consultant will:
• Recruit, visit, and call individual businesses to support their efforts to become certified Green Businesses, arrange audits, conduct site visits, and complete follow-up tasks to support them
• Conduct City ordinance compliance visits, calls, and provide technical assistance on topics such as: single-use plastic foodware, solid waste, stormwater, and wastewater regulatory compliance
• Participate in outreach/canvassing days to recruit businesses to participate in EI programs throughout the State
• Track your progress using our custom database and our collaborative project management tools
• Review your progress with the Regional Manager and/or clients
• Organize your time, files, contacts, expenses, and budgets
• Be able to identify and prioritize projects within a constrained budget
• Update online resources for businesses and for program partners
• Motivate businesses through challenges and perceived barriers, providing empathy while maintaining the need to comply with regulatory requirements and/or nudging them toward voluntary programs.
• Support the Regional Manager with other tasks as needed
From time to time, you will also:
• Create space for celebration of accomplishments: visit recently certified businesses with delivery of certificates, taking photos, and helping them with promotions
• Plan and promote events
• Create and edit website and Canva (graphics) content
• Assist with developing newsletter, social media, and other content
Technical skills required
• Google Suite familiarity: Google Drive, Google Docs, spreadsheets, slide decks, etc,. and Google applications familiarity
• Spreadsheets including basic functions, data imports, and entry on Google Sheets and/or Excel
• WordPress, Mailchimp, Basecamp, Canva, Hubspot, Recyclist, are all a plus
• Previous experience with environmental regulatory enforcement a plus
• Prefer up to 3 years of experience with growing responsibilities
Additional Requirements
• Identify and communicate trends, opportunities or relevant experiences “in the field” to managers and other staff to support a team approach to program implementation and success.
• Reliable transportation
• Sales and marketing experience
• Demonstrated strong written and verbal communication skills
• Located in or willing to travel through San Benito, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, and Monterey counties on a weekly basis
• Demonstrated passion for helping the community and/or environment
• Is a go getter, fast learner, willing to wear many hats, and can organize their time efficiently according to budget constraints
• Accustomed to balancing many priorities and tasks
• Event planning experience
Additional skills and experience to highlight in your cover letter:

• Media experience (writing press releases, media relations, journalism, etc.)
• Graphic design experience and interest (Canva, etc.)
• Photography/video experience
• Native Spanish speaking
