About the position

This role is pivotal in administering the North Pacific Observer Program, which is essential for the research, conservation, and management of fish and aquatic species populations and their habitats. This includes overseeing the performance of employees, managing resources, and directing the full suite of programs within the FMA Division. As the Division Director, the Supervisory Fish Biologist will represent the FMA Division in various external engagements, collaborating with stakeholders such as the Alaska Regional Office, North Pacific Fishery Management Council (NPFMC), NMFS Headquarters, academic institutions, the State of Alaska, and the fishing industry. The role requires a strong emphasis on leadership, strategic planning, and effective communication of scientific findings to diverse audiences. Responsibilities
• Serve as the Division Director of the Fisheries Monitoring and Analysis (FMA) Division at the Alaska Fisheries Science Center (AFSC).

• Administer the North Pacific Observer Program.

• Lead professionals in researching, preserving, conserving, propagating, and managing fish and other aquatic species populations and their habitats.

• Represent the FMA Division in external events and activities with various stakeholders.
,
• Align the FMA Division with AFSC science priorities and ensure employee performance matches organizational goals.

• Direct and manage the full suite of programs and resources of the AFSC FMA Division.
,
• Exercise managerial authority to develop annual activity and staffing plans for priority research and monitoring activities.

• Provide leadership in planning and executing a multi-million dollar annual budget.

Requirements
• U.S. Citizenship is required.

• Must be suitable for Federal employment as determined by a background investigation.

• Selectee may be subject to serving a one-year probationary period.

• Must be registered for Selective Service, if applicable.

• Completion of OGE Form 450 financial disclosure is required if selected.

• A degree in biological science with specific coursework in aquatic subjects and animal sciences is required.

• At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level in the Federal Service is required.
