Job Description

The Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) is offering a Summer Student position in Sustainability Sciences at the MacPhail School of Energy in Calgary, AB. This role involves supporting research initiatives, conducting fieldwork, and assisting with outreach activities related to sustainability. Ideal for students in Environmental Science or related fields, it provides hands-on experience and opportunities for technical writing and public engagement.
The MacPhail School of Energy is the only energy school in Canada, and we are charting a new course with a focus on sustainable energy sources and practices. MacPhail School of Energy provides hands-on, industry-guided training in labs that mimic job site environments, giving students the skills needed to find a rewarding career in the energy sector.

The Opportunity

The Summer Student position at the MacPhail School of Energy in Sustainability Science is a multifaceted role that involves supporting the Sustainability Pod's Principal Investigator with various activities including field work and data collection, essential for sustainability studies and research. Additionally, the role extends to assisting booth development for events, expos, and exhibits.

This position not only demands an excellent command of written English for effective communication but also offers a unique blend of technical, educational, and practical experiences, making it an ideal opportunity for students passionate about sustainability and environmental science to apply their knowledge and contribute to meaningful sustainability initiatives.

The Role
• Support research initiatives (50%)
• Assist in planning and executing hands-on outdoor field work activities, data collection, additional research activities as required.
• This could involve collecting samples, conducting environmental surveys, or gathering data pertinent to sustainability studies and research.
• This aspect of the job provides a valuable opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world situations and gain experience in fieldwork methodologies.
• Assist with the preparation of technical reports and summaries (30%)
• Draw on desktop research and fieldwork activities to produce clear and concise documentation.
• This offers the opportunity to enhance technical writing skills, gain hands-on experience in synthesizing complex data, and contribute to impactful project outcomes.
• Support Sustainability Pod outreach activities (20%)
• Assist in planning and executing various activities such as participating in the Mayor’s Environmental Expo.
• Engage with the public or school communities about sustainability practices and the Sustainability Pod’s educational programs.

Qualifications & Experience
• Currently enrolled in or graduating from a program related to Environmental Science, Water Management or Sustainability.
• Working knowledge of technical and educational terminology.
• Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
• Ability to work outdoors for extended periods of time.
• Ability to organize and format documents.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Excellent organizational and time management skills.

Hourly rate: $22.79
