2025 SUMMER INTERNSHIP RESEARCH BRIEF

This year, interns will undertake research that focuses on the role of cities in regional biodiversity. The practice of rewilding – repairing landscapes, restoring natural processes, and reintroducing wildlife – has gained momentum in recent years. While the concept applies primarily to larger tracts of land in rural and suburban landscapes, what form could rewilding take in cities?

At Future Green’s recently completed project, St. John’s Terminal, the NYC Bird Alliance has observed over 40 bird species on the 2.5 acres of green roofs and open spaces. This raises questions of how landscape designs in cities, while small in their individual size, might contribute collectively to create a patchwork of habitats. Understanding how green roofs, gardens, and pocket parks might function within a patchwork must be grounded in science; how do patch size, surrounding land uses, and native plant selections impact the use of landscape designs as habitat?

This summer, in collaboration with Future Green designers, the intern will develop a literature review of publications relevant to these topics, writing short synopses of each and providing an overall synthesis. The goal will be to establish a robust research platform that will inform future project work and design explorations. In our projects, we have seen how post-occupancy observation and monitoring provides ‘proof of concept’ and reveals to us what did and did not work in our design, helping us to determine maintenance practices and design strategies for future projects. Creating this feedback loop between scientific research and design is an invaluable skill that we hope to impart through this internship project.

A portfolio and cover letter MUST be submitted in order to be considered. If you cannot attach to your application, please send via email to info@futuregreenstudio.com.
