Job Description

Soka is hiring Student Sustainability Educators to promote sustainable practices on campus and in the community. Responsibilities include organizing educational events, conducting research, developing outreach materials, and collaborating with student organizations. Candidates should demonstrate a passion for sustainability, possess strong communication skills, and be enrolled as full-time students. The position requires a commitment of 8-20 hours per week, starting December 2025.
The Student Sustainability Educator's (SSE) role is to foster a culture of awareness and action regarding sustainable practices at SUA and in the community at large. The SSE will receive training and resources to become a leader for sustainability and will organize activities, projects, and educational communications that support sustainable progress and social justice at SUA. The SSE will serve as role model for their peers. The SSE will create programs and events to assist students in learning relevant and easy strategies for living sustainably on campus. The SSE will conduct research about a different topic along with strategies to share. The SSE is expected to establish relationships and connections with students to create awareness about their role in their community. The SSE can work independently but be enthusiastic to collaborate with each other and other departments on campus. This position is peer supervised by Tsuneo Yabusaki, Director of Administration and Chair to the Campus Sustainability Committee, and Marie Nydam, faculty advisor to the SSE.

Job Description

Responsibilities
• Organize educational events and programing for campus at large
• Participate in weekly team meetings
• Assist in SUA's AASHE STARS process with research and data entry
• Develop sustainability outreach materials including emails, presentations, social media content, and posters
• Attend training meetings and professional development for peer education programs including DEI, AASHE annual conference, and more.
• Assist in recruiting 1-2 peer educators into the program for the following year
• Attend and present at Campus Sustainability Committee meetings as a student representative
• Collaborate with and be a resource for student organizations and campus departments
• Organize the Sustainability Group and conduct student-led meetings
• Commit at least 4 hours a month to organize and run the Soka Closet (Sustainable Fashion Focus)
• Commit at least 4 hours a month to the Soka Style Studio (SSS) (Sustainable Fashion Focus)
• Organize an annual clothing swap across campus (Sustainable Fashion Focus)
• Perform other duties as assigned

Desired Qualifications
• Member of the Sustainability Group - peer organized by the Educators
• Demonstrated interest in sustainability with a history of taking courses at SUA relating to sustainability or Environmental Studies concentration
• Excellent planning and organizational skills with attention to detail
• Innovative, strong communication, and shows desire to work in a team
• Passionate about sustainable fashion and is familiar with current sustainable fashion projects on campus (Sustainable Fashion Focus)

Qualifications and Requirements
• Must be enrolled as full-time student
• Must be in good standing with the university
• A willingness to be visible, available, and approachable in your community

Time Commitment

8-20 hours per week

The base salary range for this position is listed above. Compensation ranges are based on several factors including job function, experience and geographic location. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors including candidate experience and expertise, and may vary from the range listed here.
