StormFest Station Educator - Youth Environmental Educator

The City of Burien is seeking Station Educators for the StormFest event, an interactive stormwater festival for 6th grade students from Highline Public Schools. Educators will co-teach lessons on stormwater pollution and watershed ecology during the event on June 10-12 at Des Moines Beach Park. Participants will receive a stipend and training. This role involves in-person teaching and commitment to all event days.

StormFest Station Educators Description & Details

What is StormFest?

StormFest is a field-based stormwater learning event that engages all 6th grade students in the Highline Public Schools (HPS). At StormFest, students rotate through five hands-on education stations to learn about their local watersheds, the animals that live in them, sources of pollution, and engineering solutions to prevent stormwater pollution. Station Educator Description & Details

As a station educator, you will co-teach one of five stormwater-related lessons to groups of Highline Public School 6th grade students. StormFest will happen over three days (June 10, 11, and 12) at Des Moines Beach Park.
• Stormwater Pollution - Macroinvertebrate Tolerance Levels
• Students will investigate aquatic macroinvertebrates and their pollution tolerance levels to assess stream health. After analyzing results, students will discuss best practices to keep harmful pollutants out of our watershed.
• Watershed Model
• Students will explore the concepts of a watershed and stormwater pollution using a 3D model (EnviroScape) as well as maps of local watersheds.
• Community Actions
• Students will explore actions to reduce stormwater runoff pollution through a relay race style game. Students will then work in groups to create an advertisement for a solution to a common stormwater pollutant.
• Schoolyard Solutions
• Students will perform an experiment to understand the difference between impermeable and permeable surfaces.
• Low Tide Beach Walk
• Students will expand their knowledge of nearshore ecology by touring the watershed and observing organisms found on the beach during low-tide.

Station Educators will be provided:
• $415 stipend for participating on training day and co-teaching at three event days.
• Returning Station Educators will receive an additional $50 stipend.
• Spanish bi-lingual station educators will receive an additional $50 stipend for their language services.
• Training and support for lesson planning and teaching.
• Free lunch on event days.
• Free on-site parking or King County Metro bus vouchers.

Commitment as a Station Educator:
• Co-teach for all three event dates (June 10, 11, and 12). Event days are typically from 8:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
• Attend an in-person training on June 4th, 2025 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Des Moines Beach Park Auditorium to learn how to teach the lesson, hear tips for working with students, and review the event logistics.
