Google is seeking a Staff Software Engineer in Sustainability and Efficiency for its Durham, NC location. Candidates should have a Bachelor's degree, 8 years of software development experience, and expertise in performance and computer architecture. The role involves optimizing carbon reduction for compute and ML platforms and developing energy-efficient system architectures. • 8 years of experience in software development, and with data structures/algorithms.

• Experience in Performance and Computer Architecture.

Preferred qualifications:
• Master’s degree or PhD in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field.
• 3 years of experience in a technical leadership role leading project teams and setting technical direction.
• 3 years of experience working in a complex, matrixed organization involving cross-functional or cross-business projects.
• Experience in one Sustainability and Carbon Neutrality, Operating Systems, SQL, Large-Scale Distributed Systems, and Borg.

In this role, you will be working on carbon reduction optimizations for both general purpose compute and accelerated ML platforms, with an emphasis on hardware-software co-optimizations for both Cloud and internal use cases. You will be developing end-to-end energy efficiency and life-cycle evaluation/analysis/optimization support for new and existing hardware products, evaluating and developing new system architectures, as well as improving the end-to-end software stack.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $197,000-$291,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Responsibilities
• Influence and coach a distributed team of engineers.
• Facilitate alignment and clarity across teams on goals, outcomes, and timelines.
• Manage project priorities, deadlines, and deliverables.
• Harness data-driven approaches to bring clarity to ambiguous problem space of balancing Google's compute needs with emissions reductions.
• Lead cross-functional projects to reduce the carbon footprint of Google's compute infrastructure, from initial concept through analysis, development, and launch.
