Job Description

Carbon, Inc. is seeking a Staff Mechanical Engineer to lead the design and development of innovative additive manufacturing solutions in Redwood City, CA. This role requires collaboration across engineering teams and ownership of product development from design to production. Candidates should have a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering and over 7 years of experience. The position requires in-office attendance four to five days a week.

The Role

As an Mechanical Engineering Lead, you will help us architect and build new groundbreaking additive manufacturing solutions ranging from new printers to new ways to postprocessing equipment. As a member of a tight-knit and agile hardware team, you'd contribute ideas and develop practical solutions to an evolving list of never before seen challenges. You will own product development from design to production handoff. Your work will help ensure that we deliver great products and delight our customers while changing the world of additive manufacturing.

Note: This role is based in our Redwood City office and you will be expected to be in-office four to five days per week, depending on project stage.

You will…
• Own design and architecture of complex parts and subassemblies and bring new 3D printing hardware to market.
• Perform hands-on validation of your subassemblies alongside our Systems, Electrical, Software, and Optical teams.
• Collaborate directly across engineering and operations to ensure on-time product development, from Concept to New Product Introduction
• Communicate timelines and major product decisions with relevant members of leadership.
• Drink from a firehose to learn the ins-and-outs of our 3D printing technology, Digital Light Synthesis.

You have…
• A B.S. Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related technical degree.
• 7+ years experience successfully taking mechanical designs from concept to production.
• An attitude of mentorship towards junior engineers across the organization.
• Expertise in performing engineering analysis of parts and assemblies that can include: detailed tolerance, safety, thermal, stress, fatigue, lifetime, manufacturability, failure modes, and cost.
• Experience in material selection in sheet metal, metal, plastic, and elastomers.
• Familiarity with sheet metal fabrication methods, plastic injection molding, casting, and CNC machining.
• Ability to manage complex supplier relationships.
• Exceptional communication skills and ability to present and defend design decisions to leadership.

Bonus Experience…
• Experience designing for 3D printing and using 3D printers.
• Experience in a production environment & comfort working with technicians on the manufacturing floor.
• Experience working with overseas contract manufacturers and remotely directing activities during pilot and production builds.
• Programming experience in python or arduino, for running simulations or cycle tests.
• Understanding of product quality metrics and methods including GD&T, DFMEA, Statistical Process Control (SPC)

At Carbon, we look at the person holistically and carefully consider a wide range of factors when determining salary. The Bay Area, CA compensation bracket for this position is $152,800 - $229,200 per year. In order to maintain equitable internal pay practices, we aim to hire new employees near the midpoint of $191,00, taking into account your experience, work location, certifications, and the unique skills you bring to the role.
