BC Hydro is seeking a Sr. Engineer - Energy Balancing (Revenue Analytics & Assurance) based in Vancouver or Victoria, BC. This full-time, permanent position involves overseeing energy balancing components, integrating SCADA devices, and ensuring data accuracy. The role includes technical stewardship of check meter assets, relationship management, and guiding staff. The annual salary ranges from $107,000 to $135,300, with a closing date for applications on April 11, 2025.

What you'll do
• Reporting to the Manager, Revenue Analytics & Assurance, the Energy Balancing Senior Engineer will be responsible for the stewardship and enhancement of the Province-wide energy balancing component of the SMI theft detection solution.
• Plans, evaluates and integrates power system supervisory control and data acquisition devices into the Energy Analytics Solution (EAS) suite
• As an experienced professional engineer, reviews the operational plan for distribution SCADA equipment, audits the installed SCADA devices for accurate reads in EMS and PI systems, and enables SCADA devices to report into the Energy Analytics Solution
• As an experienced professional engineer, reviews the distribution grid using GIS and operational drawings to identify correct installation locations for temporary and permanent check meters on primary network
• Develops and maintains a review process for SCADA equipment reads reporting into Energy Analytics Solution to ensure no discrepancies caused by defective instrument sensors or equipment settings defects after commissioning
• Investigates, analyzes and reviews data/read issues with SCADA devices to ensure accuracy
• Investigates, analyzes and solves the more challenging or unusual energy balance problems by devising new approaches or by applying existing criteria in novel ways
• Provides technical stewardship of BC Hydro’s 5,000 check meter assets across their lifecycle to ensure accuracy reliability and optimal use.
• Develops and maintains effective professional relationships with internal and external colleagues in order to determine relative priorities and to assess the impact of the work on others
• Reviews and advises on the Energy Analytics Solution enhancements work of assigned Hydro staff, consultants, and contractors and reviews completed work to ensure accuracy, achievement of required results and adherence to accepted engineering practice and electrical power system fundamentals.
• Determines relative EAS priorities, assesses the impact of work on others and facilitates the resolution of issues, and manages stakeholder and service provider relationships to accomplish objectives and resolve issues of concern
• Assigns work and gives instructions, advice and technical guidance to other analysts, engineers and technical support staff
• Provides regular coaching and training sessions to investigation advisors, analysts, and contractors
• Monitors, assesses and prioritizes human intelligence and business intelligence driven leads derived from revenue meter and transformer analytics to identify areas for energy balance monitoring and investigation
• Leads analysis of Energy Balancing Sections to detect instances of non-technical loss and/or systemic causes contributing to energy imbalances within the distribution network related to SCADA device accuracy
• Leads the prioritization of field inspection efforts for multiple investigation teams and closely supports these teams to work productively in the field
• Incorporates learning's from field inspections to continually improve analytical quality and program productivity and contributes to the evolution of the Energy analytics solution
• Maintains confidential and trusted relationships both internally and with external stakeholders (including law enforcement contacts)
• Directs regional investigative priorities and synthesizes intelligence to support actionable and successful investigation of high legal / reputation / safety risk situations by the field inspection team of security and investigation advisors
• Identifies and tests new types of analysis to improve detection of electricity theft, productive field inspection, and identification of involvement of employees and contractors
• Works together with field security and investigation advisors and other internal stakeholders to improve analytical output and reduce energy loss by championing teamwork
• Leads advancement of Energy Analytics Solution (EAS)
• Recommends and conducts complex energy balance investigations regarding energy losses and potential thefts and/or stolen BC Hydro assets and regular reporting on distribution losses throughout BC
• Directs the activities of electrical employees and/or contractors assigned to the field inspection program
• Develops short-medium term operational plans to manage down energy losses due to theft and other revenue leakage and sustaining the benefits
• Develops complex and comprehensive analysis of Energy Balancing Sections to detect instances of non-technical loss and/or systemic causes contributing to energy imbalances within the distribution network related to SCADA device accuracy.
• Identifies system inefficiencies, power outages, equipment failures that contribute to the evolution of the SMI Analytics solution
• Provides high level expertise in complex distribution research, forecasting, risk management and other studies related to theft investigation and revenue loss
• Directs, develops and maintains advanced modeling techniques for use in discovering insights in data; establishes and ensures modelling methodology and forecasting techniques and procedures used throughout the team are appropriate and applied properly
• Works with clients within other Business Units using analytics and data to improve performance, reduce errors, ensure process compliance, and reduce costs.

What you bring
• 8 years or more of relevant engineering experience.
• Graduated with an Electrical engineering degree which is recognized by Canadian universities.
• Registered, or eligible for immediate registration, as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng) in the Province of British Columbia with EGBC.
• Knowledge of the following systems: SCADA, DADs, EAS.
• Strong communication, teamwork and interpersonal skills.
