About the position

The Shorebird Predation Management Biologist will play a crucial role in conducting predation management activities for shorebirds in the Florida Panhandle. This position involves collaboration with shorebird program staff to identify and mitigate sources of nest loss due to predation, utilizing various management techniques and tools. The biologist will work both independently and as part of a regional team to achieve conservation goals, while also engaging with stakeholders and the public to promote awareness and understanding of predation management efforts.

Responsibilities
• Conduct shorebird predation management activities at multiple sites within the Florida panhandle.
,
• Identify sources of shorebird and seabird nest loss and determine the responsible predator using tracks and other signs.
,
• Perform tracking surveys to evaluate the presence and spatial use patterns of potential predators in beach/dune habitats.
,
• Conduct population assessments for common nest predators using sand transects, scent stations, bait stations, and game cameras.
,
• Implement non-lethal predator aversion techniques and explore novel methods for predator management.
,
• Carry out lethal removal of avian and mammalian predators as necessary.
,
• Document all predation management activities, record GPS points, and create maps using ArcGIS or Google Earth.
,
• Assist with report writing, data analysis, and dissemination of findings to stakeholders.

Requirements
• 2 - 6 years of experience in wildlife management or a related field.
,
• Experience communicating with stakeholders and coordinating resources between agencies.
,
• Strong customer service skills.
,
• Proficiency in data recording and report writing.
,
• Experience with handheld GPS units and mapping software such as GIS or Google Earth.
,
• Ability to trailer, load, and drive a UTV in remote locations and difficult terrain.
,
• Flexible work schedule, including long days in the field and working up to 10 consecutive days in the field.
,
• Ability to work effectively with little direct supervision in remote locations and under hot and humid conditions.
,
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Outlook).
,
• Excellent critical thinking skills for addressing complex challenges.

• Experience with mammalian and avian predation management.

• Proficiency with firearms and traps.
