Job Description
The Program Manager for SHI's Indigenous Science Pathways oversees a federal grant for Indigenous Science education. Responsibilities include managing staff, ensuring compliance, and coordinating initiatives like the STEAM Academy. The role requires strong communication, organizational skills, and experience with federal grants. This full-time position is based at SHI’s Indigenous Science Building in the U.S., with some travel to Southeast Alaska communities.
Job Summary
The Program Manager oversees a large federal grant supporting Indigenous Science education and research. This role is responsible for managing program staff, ensuring fiscal accountability, and meeting all grant-related reporting and compliance requirements. The Program Manager serves as the primary point of contact for internal and external partners, oversees program implementation, and ensures alignment with SHI’s mission and cultural values.
Duties/Responsibilities
• Manage the Indigenous Science Pathways program, ensuring alignment with grant goals, federal compliance, and SHI’s mission.
• Oversee the Research Lab in SHI’s Indigenous Science Building, including lab policies, research protocols, and programming coordination.
• Supervise the STEAM Pathways team and collaborate with the Project Evaluator to monitor progress and impact.
• Lead budget management and fiscal reporting for the program, ensuring responsible and transparent use of grant funds.
• Coordinate key initiatives such as the annual STEAM Academy, community engagement, internships, and educational partnerships.
• Serve as primary liaison to funders and partners, and support future grant development to sustain and expand programming.
Required Skills
• Experience co-developing knowledge with Native American/Alaska Native communities.
• Demonstrated high level of verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
• Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and activities with attention to detail
• Strong organizational and planning skills in program management and coordination.
• Strong intra and interorganizational collaborative skills.
• Experience managing federal grants, grant reporting, and project evaluation.
• Technical capacity and expertise in using charts, tables, graphs, spreadsheets, and databases.
• Technical capacities in ecological field research including sampling design, field- based sampling techniques, data management and analysis, and scientific communication.
• Knowledge of Southeast Alaska Native culture and Southeast Alaska’s communities
Supervisory Responsibility
This position will oversee 3 team members.
Work Environment
This position’s duties are performed at SHI’s Indigenous Science Building. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines.
Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to verbally communicate. This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, and climbing all day. The employee must frequently lift and/or move objects up to 20 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move objects up to 50 pounds.
About this Role
This is a full-time benefited position. SHI employees are expected to work during SHI’s regular business hours of 8:00am to 4:30pm Monday to Friday. Additionally, many employees work up to 45 hours per week or additional time as needed to meet workload demands or special events such as Celebration. Some travel required to partner communities in Southeast Alaska.
Required Education and Experience
• Bachelor of Arts or Science Degree in education or project-related field
• 3 years of professional work in project management and program coordination
Preferred Education and Experience
• Advanced degree in biology, environmental sciences, or associated discipline
• 5 years of professional work in the education or project-related field
• Field experience and knowledge in STEM education
• Experience developing and executing research projects and programs with NA/AN governments, organizations, communities, and individuals.
