Job Description

Unilever is seeking a Site Environmental Leader for their Gloucester Factory. This role involves managing environmental projects, ensuring compliance, and collaborating on waste management and sustainability initiatives. The leader will assess environmental impacts, support emergency planning, and develop long-term strategies for energy efficiency and carbon neutrality. Responsibilities include preparing reports, maintaining environmental standards, and ensuring compliance with regulations.

Job Title: SHE – Site Environmental Leader

Location: Gloucester Factory (Site based)

JOB PURPOSE

The SHE Environmental lead will report to the Site SHE Manager. In this role, the Site Environmental Lead will work with a team of peer professionals to deliver Environmental projects, ensure Environmental Compliance, manage Environmental systems and reports, and collaborate closely with the site services team in waste management with a particular focus on waste segregation, recycling, and reuse. The role will also involve working closely with external clients to excel in Environmental performance. RESPONSIBILITIES

Primary Areas of Responsibility
• Justify environmental management in the workplace.
• Recognise which workplace activities may be subject to environmental legislation or enforcement.
• Assess environmental aspects and impacts, and evaluate existing controls.
• Support environmental emergency planning.
• Understand the importance of reducing environmental harm.
• Outline the issues associated with waste and its management.
• Explain the pros and cons of various energy sources and how to use them more efficiently.
• Understand a range of environmental issues to improve environmental performance and reduce harm.
• Work within an environmental management system and contribute to continual improvement.
• Recognise environmental aspects and associated impacts, and evaluate the effectiveness of existing controls.
• Support decision-making with ethical, legal, and financial arguments.
• Understand the links between your organisation’s activities and wider environmental issues.

Strategic capability to meet Unilever and site Commitments
• Set a 3-year, 5-year, and 10-year strategy to meet company Energy efficiency projects and carbon neutral roadmap.
• Lead critical root cause investigations for complex incidents.
• Capex responsibility and Project delivery capability.

Maintain the documented standards, policies, and practices to ensure compliance with regulatory and Unilever expectations.
• Prepare data for internal and external company reports for Environmental technologies ensuring accuracy and brand protection.
• Owner of Environmental Standards and Guidance specific to Sourcing Unit requirements.
• Technical expert in specific Environmental technologies like manufacturing decarbonization, water management, energy management, waste management, air emission control, hazardous chemical control, noise control, dust control, machine safety, mechanized material handling equipment safety, industrial hygiene, and others.
• Support ongoing compliance with Environmental Permit operating requirements.
• Support submissions to the Environment Agency including quarterly, annual, and pollution inventory reporting.
• Ensure ongoing compliance with the hazardous waste regulations.
• Compile site waste records, review and authorise monthly waste management information packs.

ALL ABOUT YOU

Professional Skills

ESSENTIAL
• Certification / Diploma in NEBOSH Environment.
• Sound knowledge of the main elements of UK and EC legislation for environmental protection and general principles of environmental and pollution control management.
• Excellent knowledge of Unilever Environmental standards.
• Working knowledge of all SHE IT tools and their integration into other functional work processes.
• Influencing skills and international business/cultural sensitivity.
• Good observation and auditing skills.
• Environmental Project delivery capability.

Experience

ESSENTIAL
• 5-10 years in Plant Operations/Engineering/Sustainability.
• Appropriate functional/technical and project management expertise.

PREFERRED
• 5-10 years’ experience in supply chain operations.
