Idaho National Laboratory’s (INL) Advanced Transportation Department in the Energy and Environment Science and Technology (EES&T) directorate is looking for a Senior Transportation Data Scientist for its Mobility Analytics group. Our team works onsite in Idaho Falls, Idaho with a 9X80 schedule with every other Friday off. The Mobility Analytics Group identifies and explores technology needs and solutions for vehicle/grid integration, connected mobility, and advanced fueling infrastructure. The group performs technoeconomic analysis, develops data-driven models of technology adoption and use, and simulates demand for transportation energy infrastructure across numerous use cases and scenarios. As a senior data scientist, you will apply mathematics, statistics, and computer science to derive insights and conclusions from large data sets. Working with a multi-disciplinary team of scientists and engineers, you will design, develop, and test algorithms and software-based analytical tools to operationalize those algorithms. You will adapt machine learning and artificial intelligence technologies to solve scientific problems and to extract new insights from scientific data. To be successful in this position, you need a highly collaborative mindset, positive energy, and ability to stay focused on and achieve goals in a dynamic environment. You need to be a versatile, engaged researcher who is passionate about creating new knowledge and tools that will directly impact our nation’s future transportation and energy infrastructure. Responsibilities: - Lead cross-functional teams to analyze data and generate results through data analytics, visualization, and modeling on a variety of computational architectures (cloud, on-premises, edge-based). - Apply advanced technologies, such as explainable artificial intelligence/machine learning (AI/ML), large language models (LLMs), physics-informed machine learning, process-informed machine learning, systems performance analysis, and/or data fusion methodologies. - Develop partnerships and collaborate with government agencies, academia, and private-sector companies to achieve project objectives. - Publish results of research and development in a mix of referred publications and conference proceedings. - Analyze data quality, characterize, and communicate data quality issues to data providers, and design repeatable data processing procedures to accurately analyze data in the presence of quality issues. - Work with domain experts to understand the scope and limits of questions that can be answered by data sets, identify key data features as inputs to analysis, and design output metrics that elegantly describe system attributes and behavior. - Lead and contribute to proposal writing to acquire funding from diverse funding sponsors.
