Job Description
The NSW Government is seeking a Senior Scientist in Climate & Atmospheric science based in Lidcombe, New South Wales, with flexible work location arrangements. The role involves conducting climate science projects and statistical analyses, requiring a PhD and expertise in climate modelling. The position offers a salary between $120,701 and $134,460 and aims to deliver impactful climate projections and research for various stakeholders.

Senior Climate Scientist/Modeller (Environmental Officer Class 9) Salary relative to experience, and ranges from $120,701 to $134,460 + super and leave loading Ongoing, full-time (35 hours per week) position based in Lidcombe but with flexible work location arrangements Our growing team of climate scientists are seeking to appoint a Senior Scientist who is passionate about delivering robust and rigorous state-of-the-art, impactful climate science and modelling that can be used by a wide variety of stakeholders across government, industry and academia. About You Are you experienced in conducting climate/earth system science projects and statistical/geospatial analyses and visualisations of large multi-dimensional climate model data sets using coding languages such as Python, R, and developing associated earth system models? Are you excited to work within a growing team delivering state-of-the-art regional climate projections as part of the NSW and Australian Regional Climate Modelling (NARCliM) programme and to deliver impactful projects in climate extremes and climate risk? Essential requirements A PhD in climate science/climate modelling; atmospheric physics; physical oceanography, ideally followed by a postdoctoral position at a leading research institution. Experience working with global and regional climate models and data, including NARCliM2.0 and other Australian and international models. Demonstrated experience in delivering rigorous science projects in climate and/or earth system science. Demonstrated expertise in climate change topics pertinent to NSW, especially climate mode (e.g. ENSO, SAM, IOD, MJO) variation and their associated influences on the regional climate of Australia, including changes in regional precipitation and fire weather; climate extreme events like storms, floods, droughts, heatwaves and fire weather under different greenhouse gas emissions scenarios. Experience conducting statistically rigorous assessments, conducting spatial analyses of large data sets and developing associated models. Demonstrated expert level coding skills in at least one of Python, R, MATLAB and an enthusiasm to advance this key skill. Passion for writing well-structured, well-tested, maintainable, performant, and well-documented code, with an emphasis on scientific code. Demonstrated experience of High-Performance Computing technology / cloud computing environments. Strong peer-reviewed publication record, relative to opportunity Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
