Job Description
The Australian Government is seeking a Senior Risk Advisor for the Antarctic Division in Kingston, TAS. This role involves providing technical advice on risk management, facilitating workshops, preparing reports, and coordinating business continuity activities. The position offers professional growth within a collaborative team dedicated to enhancing the AAD's risk and business continuity maturity while contributing to Australia's Antarctic strategic objectives.
• APS 6 - $95,438 - $108,360 per annum plus superannuation

Who we are
The Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) is part of the Commonwealth Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water. As primary agency for Australia's Antarctic Program (AAP), the AAD is responsible for achieving the Australian Government's Antarctic goals. These goals are to:
• maintain the Antarctic Treaty System and enhance Australia's influence within it
• protect the Antarctic environment
• understand the role of Antarctica in the global climate system
• Undertake scientific work of practical, economic and national significance
The AAD also has responsibility for administering the Australian Antarctic Territory and the Territory of Heard Island and McDonald Islands.
The People and Culture Branch is crucial in supporting our workforce and fostering a positive organisational culture. It is instrumental in leading the division's cultural transformation initiative, as outlined in Leigh Russell's 2023 independent review of our workplace culture. Through implementing our cultural change program, we are affecting substantial shifts in our operational approaches to ensure the safety and inclusivity of our workplaces for all employees. The branch places significant emphasis on providing comprehensive support for expeditioners, encompassing recruitment, onboarding, training, performance management, as well as medical and organisational psychological services, and offboarding. Additionally, the branch delivers essential divisional services spanning media, communication, risk management, and business continuity. The AAD remains steadfast in its commitment to cultivating a positive, inclusive culture that promotes diversity and equity.
The Safety and Risk team’s primary function is twofold: to mentor and provide advice on the management of safety across the breadth of the Australian Antarctic Program, and to continually improve AAD resilience and maturity in risk and business continuity processes.
The Job
Under general guidance from the Assistant Director Risk, the Senior Risk Advisor will:
• Provide technical advice and guidance on risk management activities.
• Facilitate risk review workshops.
• Prepare risk briefing materials and analytical reports.
• Contribute to critical incident management processes and assurance of risk critical controls.
• Coordinate business continuity activities and reporting.
• Liaise with internal and external stakeholders and contribute to organisational objectives by participation in relevant committees and forums.

What we are looking for
We are seeking candidates who can demonstrate the following:
Knowledge and Experience
• Solid technical knowledge and expertise in the practical application of risk management principles and processes in an operational context.
• General understanding of business continuity principles and their application.
• A collaborative mindset, with demonstrated experience in constructive and positive engagement with a range of stakeholders.
Skills and capabilities
• High level verbal and written communication skills to communicate succinctly, clearly and effectively with a range of audiences.
• Proven interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and maintain productive relationships with stakeholders.
• Well-developed analytical and problem-solving skills with a strong attention to detail and ability to deliver high quality work within agreed timeframes.
• Demonstrated capacity to understand and translate complex information.
• Sound judgement.
Please note that the successful applicant may be required to travel to the Antarctic and sub-Antarctic regions therefore they may be required to meet specific medical, adaptability and personal qualities requirements appropriate to working in those environments.
In order to undertake travel to the Antarctic & sub-Antarctic regions they will need to:
• demonstrate the range of personal qualities and interpersonal skills necessary to perform as a successful team member within isolated Antarctic and sub-Antarctic environments
• demonstrate an ability to effectively adapt and respond to the demands of living and working in an isolated and confined environment as determined by a psychological (adaptability) assessment
• be certified as fit for Antarctic service by the AAD’s Polar Medicine Unit.
Desirable qualifications
• A minimum of 3 years relevant experience in a high-risk working environment.
• Experience with the use of RiskWare (advantageous but not essential).
Eligibility
Citizenship - to be eligible for employment with the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water you must be an Australian citizen.
Security Clearance - this position requires a Baseline Vetting security clearance. You will be required to obtain and maintain a clearance at this level.
Pre-employment checks - your suitability for employment will be assessed through a pre-employment screening process. This process includes a requirement to undergo and satisfy a National Police Check, referee checks, character clearance and where required a pre-employment medical assessment, specified mandatory qualification(s) validation and a probation period.
