Job Description

CarbonCapture is seeking a Senior Research Engineer to develop and optimize materials for direct air capture (DAC) technologies. The role involves synthesizing novel materials, conducting advanced characterization, and leading experiments to enhance DAC performance. Candidates should have a Ph.D. in Materials Science or Chemical Engineering and at least 5 years of relevant industrial experience. The position is based in Dallas, TX, and is not remote.
Interested in working with a groundbreaking company that’s focused on decarbonizing the atmosphere? Carbon Capture Inc. develops and deploys direct air capture (DAC) machines that can be connected in large arrays to remove massive amounts of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. With a patented modular open systems architecture, our DAC platform allows for plug-and-play upgrades, mass production, unlimited scalability, and rapid technology iterations.

We are seeking a world-class experienced and highly motivated Senior Research Engineer to join our dynamic team. In this role, you’ll be at the forefront of developing and optimizing sorbents for our cutting-edge DAC technologies. You will lead efforts to advance material characterization, perform dynamic gas breakthrough experiments, and contribute to the design and improvement of novel capture materials. The ideal candidate will combine expertise in material science, chemical engineering, and process design to advance our technology and contribute to our mission of developing the best DAC technology.
Responsibilities
• Synthesis & Material Development:
• Develop and synthesize novel materials to support DAC technologies.
• Implement best practices in materials synthesis, ensuring reproducibility, scalability, and quality control.
• Advanced Characterization:
• Lead the use of various characterization techniques (e.g., spectroscopy, microscopy, X-ray diffraction, etc.) to analyze synthesized materials.
• Design and conduct experiments to assess material properties and performance.
• Interpret data from characterization instruments, compile reports, and provide insights into material behavior and performance for use in DAC applications.
• Own and lead the advanced dynamic breakthrough gas analyzers (Like Mixsorb) testing and analyzing and reporting independently.
• Use all technical/modeling features of Mixsorb software to run breakthrough tests at different environmental conditions, and predict the data for other test conditions.
• Develop advanced characterization protocols for 3

Flex, DCS, Mixsorb, environmental chamber, and other advanced gas separation characterization instruments.
• Contribute to sorbent lifetime study in the lab and connecting the dots towards larger test prototypes.
• Contribute to lead some external collaboration projects and sponsorship programs.
• Documentation & Reporting:
• Maintain detailed and accurate experimental records, data analysis, and progress reports.
• Prepare and present technical findings to Director of the sorbent, other teams such as system engineering, and at scientific conferences.
• Stay current with emerging research and developments in sorbent materials, gas capture technologies, and characterization methods.
• Contribute to writing research papers, technical reports, and patents.
Qualifications
• Education:
• Ph.D. in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or related field.
• Experience:
• 5+ years of industrial experience in an industrial R&D or material laboratory, with a focus on synthesis and characterization of novel materials for CO2 capture.
• In-depth working experience in the field of carbon capture and adsorption.
• In-depth knowledge and working experience on various sorbents suitable for DAC such as MOFs, polymers, and amine-based sorbents.
• Proficiency in a range of synthesis and characterization techniques for porous materials, including but not limited to, FTIR, NMR, SEM, XRD, BET, and TGA, Mixsorb, 3-Flex, DSC.
• Demonstrated working experience on method development for DVS to measure CO2/H2O binary.
• Demonstrated working experience on running Mixsorb breakthrough test using Mass spec, interpreting the results and reporting independently.
• Strong understanding of safety standards and regulations in laboratory environments.
• Experience with “structured sorbent” and characterization is a plus.
• Skills:
• Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate with different cross-functional teams.
• Excellent problem-solving and critical thinking abilities.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Proficient with laboratory data management and analysis software.
• Proficient with Mixsorb breakthrough test rig using Mass Spec, and DVS carbon for binary CO2/H2O…
