Why does the job exist?
This position exists to design, implement, secure, and maintain the organization's most complex information systems. It ensures the reliability, availability, and performance of enterprise systems by managing advanced configurations, resolving high-impact system issues, and developing long-term strategies for capacity planning, security, disaster recovery, and system integration. The role functions as a technical expert and provides leadership on major projects that support organizational operations and strategic IT goals.
How does it get done?
- Design, develop, install, and maintain enterprise information systems, applications, utilities, and related infrastructure.
- Design, configure, implement, and maintain system and security strategies, policies, and procedures.
- Resolve system emergencies that impact the integrity, availability, or security of user data and enterprise systems.
- Perform routine and scheduled updates, upgrades, patching, and lifecycle maintenance across servers, applications, and platforms.
- Conduct long-term strategic planning for systems development, integration, and capacity needs.
- Conceptualize, recommend, and implement system solutions within broad and complex technical frameworks.
- Perform capacity planning for system configurations, storage, software services, network services, load distribution, and interdependent system relationships.
- Utilize, evaluate, and procure tools for monitoring system and network performance, availability, and security.
- Manage and track software licensing, server certificates, hardware standards, and compliance-related artifacts.
- Ensure adherence to established software/hardware standards, systems policies, procedures, and regulatory or organizational compliance requirements.
- Support and participate in system-related audits, including security, compliance, and operational reviews.
- Contribute to, test, and support the organization's disaster recovery and business continuity plans.
- Ensure systems operate in alignment with data governance, file retention, and change management (CAB) processes, including documentation, testing, approval, and implementation.
- Lead and coordinate large-scale computing or infrastructure projects requiring advanced technical skills, project direction, and stakeholder communication.
- Act as a technical expert or lead in system administration, providing guidance and direction to other administrators as needed.
- Manage vendor relationships, including support escalations and service coordination.
- Apply expertise in multi-system and distributed computing environments, ensuring interoperability, scalability, and reliability.
- Develop and maintain plans, runbooks, and documentation to meet current and future computing needs.
- Apply knowledge of emerging security trends, best practices, threat mitigation, vulnerability remediation, and risk reduction strategies.
- Administer enterprise storage and backup solutions.

Ideal Candidate
A strong technical foundation is essential for effective performance at a senior-level systems administrator role. Familiarity in the following areas is ideal: VMware virtualization technologies (vCenter/vSphere); Microsoft Windows Server and workstation administration; System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM); enterprise patching and imaging tools such as Deployment Workbench; Cisco HyperFlex and UCS platforms; endpoint protection tools; DUO/Microsoft MFA and SSO; enterprise storage and backup solutions including Dell EMC VNXe3200, Data Domain 2200, PowerProtect Data Manager (PPDM), and Veeam or a similar product; as well as experience supporting SQL Server databases and system-level .NET applications.
Minimum Qualification
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems (MIS), Information Technology, Engineering, or similar technical degree and three (3) years of experience in systems administration. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling seven (7) years may substitute for the required education and experience.
Employment Requirements
Must maintain a New Mexico Drivers License.
Must pass and maintain a SONM Defensive Driving Certificate.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Some travel may be required. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. This position is required to respond to New Mexico Department of Health staff, and the New Mexico Department of Health Operation Center in an event of a disaster or emergency.
