Job Description
The Senior Fisheries Biologist at EnviroCareers will lead multidisciplinary projects in fisheries and aquatic ecology, ensuring high-quality deliverables and regulatory compliance. This hybrid role involves project management, technical oversight, and client engagement, with minimal travel required. The position emphasizes mentorship and collaboration within a team of scientists, directly impacting project success and the company's growth in environmental consulting.
As a Senior Fisheries Biologist, you will drive the success of multidisciplinary projects by leading project design, overseeing execution, and ensuring high-quality deliverables. Your expertise in fisheries and aquatic ecology will shape strategic study designs, regulatory submissions, and technical reviews, ensuring projects meet client needs and regulatory requirements while advancing sustainability and climate resilience.
This role offers a hybrid work model with minimal travel, allowing you to collaborate with a team of experienced scientists and biologists dedicated to innovative, science-driven solutions. Your contributions will directly impact project success, client relationships, and the company’s long-term growth in the environmental consulting space.
Remote / WFH / Hybrid: Hybrid
Travel: Minimal travel.
Salary: $90k - $140k CAD, with benefits, RRSP matching, etc. (The final salary will be determined based on qualifications, relevant experience, expertise, and professional designations. Candidates who exceed these requirements or bring additional value to the team may receive a salary outside the specified range.)
Key Performance Objectives
Project Leadership & Management:
Lead the design and planning of fisheries and aquatic studies, ensuring alignment with regulatory requirements and project objectives. Oversee complex, multi-disciplinary projects, managing budgets, schedules, and deliverables to meet client expectations and industry standards. Proactively identify risks and solutions, ensuring projects remain on track while maintaining scientific rigor and regulatory compliance. Drive the successful execution of projects from inception to completion, balancing technical excellence with budget and timeline constraints.
Technical Excellence & Senior Review:
Provide senior-level technical oversight on aquatic studies, ensuring scientific integrity and regulatory compliance in all deliverables. Review and refine technical reports, workplans, and proposals, ensuring clarity, accuracy, and strategic alignment with project goals. Champion high-quality, data-driven decision-making, integrating innovative approaches such as eDNA and environmental flow needs (EFN) into project methodologies. Guide study design, field methodologies, and statistical analyses, setting best practices for fisheries and aquatic ecology assessments.
Regulatory Approvals & Compliance:
Lead municipal, provincial, and federal regulatory approval processes, ensuring timely and successful permit applications and authorizations. Develop strategic engagement approaches to work collaboratively with regulators, industry partners, and Indigenous groups to achieve project objectives. Stay ahead of evolving regulatory frameworks, advising clients and internal teams on the implications for project planning and execution.
Client & Business Development:
Build and strengthen client relationships, identifying opportunities for new projects and long-term collaborations. Lead and contribute to proposal development, crafting compelling submissions that showcase technical expertise and strategic value. Represent the company as a thought leader in fisheries and aquatic science, attending industry conferences, presenting findings, and contributing to research advancements.
Team Leadership & Mentorship:
Mentor and develop junior and intermediate aquatics staff, fostering a culture of learning, innovation, and technical excellence. Provide training on best practices for study design, field assessments, regulatory compliance, and data interpretation to build team capacity. Act as a resource for technical problem-solving, supporting staff in navigating challenges and complex project requirements.
