Job Description

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife seeks a Senior Environmental Scientist (Supervisory) to manage the Elkhorn Slough Complex in Monterey, CA. This role involves overseeing wetland restoration, scientific research, and public use, while supervising staff and coordinating with various partners. The position requires both office and fieldwork, with potential for adverse conditions and non-traditional hours. State residency is required if housing is available.
Are you looking for an opportunity to manage one of the most important estuaries on the Central Coast? The California Department of Fish and Wildlife is looking for a highly motivated individual to oversee wetland restoration, scientific research, and public use at the ~2,500 acre Elkhorn Slough Complex which includes Elkhorn Slough, Moro Cojo, and McClusky Slough ecological reserves as well as Moss Landing wildlife area. Under the direction of the Environmental Program Manager for Lands and Wildlife, this position serves as the Reserve Manager for the Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve (ESNERR) and is responsible for the day to day supervision and leadership of the Reserve’s programs, operations, natural resources, budget and staff. The incumbent coordinates, directs, and approves activities on the Reserve including scientific research and monitoring, site and facilities maintenance, education/interpretive services, and both large and small-scale planning efforts. ESNERR is a complex collaboration of federal, state, and local partners and the position requires effective coordination between all of these entities. The incumbent may serve as acting Environmental Program Manager or Regional Manager requiring more broad knowledge of the Department’s legal, policy; political and management issues.

Working Conditions

Work is both in an office and in the field. Must be able to work outside in extreme temperatures, walk on uneven terrain, deal with mosquitoes, ticks and other stinging/biting insects, rattlesnakes and other wildlife. This position may require working weekends, holidays, non-traditional hours and outdoors during adverse weather. State housing residency is required if vacant housing is available.
