Job Description
The Queensland Government is hiring a Senior Environmental Officer in Cairns, QLD, to promote environmental outcomes in mining and industrial sectors. Responsibilities include assessing applications, setting rehabilitation milestones, and liaising with stakeholders. Candidates should have a relevant university degree. The role requires project management skills and may involve overnight travel. The position is full-time and applications are open until March 17, 2025.

The Minerals Business Centre based in Cairns is the Department’s centre of excellence for the delivery of environmental assessment and licensing services for all mineral mining operations across Queensland.
As a Senior Environmental Officer you will assess applications for proposed and existing mining and industrial activities, set rehabilitation milestones, liaise with a vast array of stakeholders, from one-person operators to large multi-national organisations, First Nations people, industry, government agencies and the community to negotiate sound environmental outcomes. You will also use your high level written communication skills to prepare complex and sensitive material for a variety of audiences.
This is also an excellent opportunity to apply your project management skills as well as expand your technical knowledge in the application of principles and practices of environmental management and work on big mining projects subject to an EIS. In the role you will also have the opportunity to further develop exceptional communication, problem solving, leadership, negotiation and collaboration skills and abilities.
Overnight travel away from the office may be required and includes travel to mine and industrial sites and other departmental offices across the State. You may also be required to participate in an on-call (after hours) incident response roster.
It is essential that you possess a university degree (undergraduate and/or postgraduate) from a recognised tertiary institution in environmental management; chemical, forensic, physical, geological, hydrological, environmental, applied and biological sciences, environmental engineering. Other closely related disciplines may be considered.
