The City and County of San Francisco is hiring a Senior Environmental Justice Coordinator to advance environmental justice and combat climate change in underserved neighborhoods. Are you passionate about environmental justice and fighting environmental racism while building capacity in San Francisco’s most affected neighborhoods to combat climate change? San Francisco Environment Department is hiring a Senior Environmental Justice Coordinator (5642).

The Senior Environmental Justice Coordinator will play a pivotal role in advancing environmental justice in San Francisco. Collaborating closely with internal teams and other city departments, they will support environmental efforts in affordable housing and manage an annual grant program aimed to mitigate the impacts of climate change in BIPOC and low-income neighborhoods. The Senior Coordinator also plays a vital role in advancing racial and social equity in San Francisco’s Climate Action Plan and throughout the other Environment Department program areas.

Role description

To excel in this role, the Senior Environmental Justice Coordinator must be well versed in environmental justice principles and have experience working with underserved communities and in grant management. Programmatic areas of focus include healthy affordable housing, integrated pest management, zero waste and climate mitigation. Additionally, they will play a key role in ensuring equitable outcomes of San Francisco’s Climate Action Plan. They will support other Department and City programs building capacity within communities to promote climate action.

Responsibilities include:
• Manage the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of Environmental Justice (EJ) projects with a special focus on areas identified in San Francisco’s Environmental Justice Map.
• Manage the EJ grant program from planning to implementation and assist in department grant and contract management including monitor grantees and contractor work to ensure alignment with program goals and timetables.
• Build and foster strong working relationships within external climate and environmental justice coalitions to advance climate justice goals and collaborate with City departments and other government agencies to create or strengthen relationships with EJ communities and stakeholders across California.
• Develop training programs, workshops, and capacity-building opportunities for underserved communities to advance the Climate Action Plan.
• Research and analyze environmental justice impacts of proposed projects using, but not limited to - CalEnviroScreen, U.S. EPA EJSCREEN, U.S. Census data, and interviews/focus groups. Manage the EJ team, including supervising and guiding2-3 full-time program staff, overseeing individual and team plans and deliverables, and regularly reporting status updates to the Climate Program Manager and other department leadership.
• Present program information to city department boards, commissions, the Board of Supervisors, and other relevant bodies as needed or requested.
• Represent San Francisco in relevant local, regional, and environmental justice events and conferences.
• Perform a wide range of administrative support functions, including those related to human resources, accounting, budgeting, invoicing, and program planning.
