About the position

The Senior Environmental Consultant position at the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) is a critical role aimed at enhancing the health and well-being of California's diverse communities. This position is part of a statewide recruitment effort and will be headquartered in the county nearest to the selected candidate's residence, specifically in Sacramento or Los Angeles. The incumbent will work under the direction of the Senior Environmental Scientist (Supervisor) within the Environmental Health Services Section (EHSS), focusing on Institutions and Recreational Health Unit. The primary responsibility of the Senior Environmental Consultant is to conduct independent environmental health surveys and review construction plans for various state-operated facilities, including adult and youth correctional facilities, state hospitals, developmental centers, and schools for the blind and deaf. The consultant will ensure compliance with federal and state health and safety laws, regulations, and industry standards. This role involves collaborating with facility management and operators to maintain safe and healthy operating conditions, providing training, and offering consultative services to rectify any deficiencies identified during inspections. The consultant will also provide professional environmental health services across multiple areas, including food service operations, housing, vector control, water treatment, waste disposal, medical services, and hazardous materials management. Given the nature of the role, the incumbent should expect to travel extensively, with travel requirements reaching up to 75% of the time, which may include overnight stays. Additionally, the position allows for telework up to three days a week, with a minimum requirement to report in-person to the designated headquarters office at least two days a week. Candidates must be California residents and maintain residency as a condition of employment. This position is permanent and full-time, offering a salary range of $7,336.00 to $9,126.00 per month, and is essential for ensuring the health and safety of California's public facilities.
