Job Description
CSS Corporation is hiring a Senior Environmental Analytical Chemist to support the EPA mobile laboratory program in emergency response. The role involves on-site and remote chemical analysis of environmental samples, requiring expertise in analytical chemistry and environmental lab operations. Responsibilities include sample preparation, data analysis using LIMS, and fieldwork travel for up to two weeks. Candidates should have a BS in Chemistry and 6-10 years of relevant experience.
About the position
The Senior Environmental Analytical Chemist will play a crucial role in the EPA mobile laboratory program within the Emergency Response and Disaster Recovery division. This position focuses on providing on-site and remote chemical analysis during significant incidents, ensuring the detection of toxic industrial chemicals and chemical warfare agents in various sample matrices. The role requires a strong background in environmental laboratory operations and analytical chemistry, along with the ability to work independently and travel for fieldwork as needed.
Responsibilities
• Prepares and analyzes environmental samples for organic environmental analysis using GC/MS, GC/ECD, purge and trap and thermal desorption instrumentation.

• Performs a variety of chemical tests and is knowledgeable of instrumental theory and techniques.

• Screens and logs in samples into LIMS, prepares samples for laboratory analysis, maintains equipment, and orders lab supplies.

• Uses LIMS and ChemStation or MassHunter software to perform data analysis.
,
• Participates in planning & strategy meetings.
,
• Suggests modifications to existing protocols & standing operating procedures, equipment, processes or techniques.
,
• Participates in evaluation process to include set up, operation & monitoring of equipment & apparatus, & more complex experimental procedures involving novel samples.

• Performs instrument and laboratory maintenance.
,
• Summarizes & records data in official notebooks, orders supplies & maintains a safe working environment.

• Prepares data packages and other reports.
,
• Works under minimal supervision and reports to the PHILIS Supervisor/Lead Chemist.
,
• Able to travel with mobile laboratories for field work for up to 2 weeks when needed.
Requirements
• BS in Chemistry or other physical science
,
• 6 - 10 years of experience in environmental laboratory operations, with experience in organic environmental analysis.
,
• Experience with GC/MS, GC/ECD or GC TOF
,
• Experience with LIMS and instrument operating software.
,
• Familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within an environmental laboratory.
,
• Must be able to pass a drug screen, medical monitoring exam, and Government Background check.
,
• Experience in field mobile laboratory operations is a plus.
Nice-to-haves
• Familiar with a variety of analytical chemistry concepts, practices, and procedures including EPA SW-846 methods and EPA Air Methods.

• Knowledgeable in EPA quality assurance programs and compliance with NELAP standards.
