Job Description

NES Fircroft is seeking a Senior Counsel for Carbon Capture and Storage Projects in London. The role involves providing legal services for CCS initiatives, including drafting agreements, regulatory compliance, and corporate transactions. Candidates should have a law degree, be a qualified solicitor or barrister, and possess 5-10 years of relevant experience. Strong knowledge of CCS and commercial law is essential. The position is full-time and starts ASAP.

Contract Length: 12 Months

Role Overview:
Join a leading company as a Senior Legal Counsel specializing in Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) Projects. You'll provide essential legal services to major CCS initiatives and assist various departments with their carbon capture activities across the UK.

Key Responsibilities:
• Deliver expert legal advice across all aspects of CCS project activities, including real estate and regulatory compliance.
• Review, draft, and negotiate a diverse range of legal and commercial agreements related to CCS initiatives.
• Engage with internal CCS teams and external stakeholders such as joint venture partners and government authorities.
• Assist in corporate transactions linked to CCS activities, including project financing and investment activities.
• Support corporate restructuring related to CCS as necessary.
• Maintain internal compliance with company policies, ensuring adherence to internal guidelines.
• Coordinate legal services within the organization to provide English law advice.

Main Accountabilities:
• Provide high-quality legal advice for real estate, planning agreements, and commercial agreements crucial for CCS projects.
• Manage legal aspects of financing, acquisition, and divestiture activities related to CCS.
• Guide international projects and transactions where relevant.
• Support company secretarial activities and corporate governance related to CCS.
• Handle dispute resolution, including litigation and arbitration.
• Contribute to professional development and internal legal knowledge sharing.

Education and Qualifications:
• Law degree with strong academic credentials.
• Qualified solicitor or barrister.
• 5-10 years post-qualification experience preferred.

Required Skills and Experience:
• Strong knowledge and experience in carbon capture and storage projects or similar, especially in the UKCS upstream oil and gas industry.
• Experience in land rights acquisition and DCO powers execution.
• Excellent legal expertise in commercial law and real estate/planning law in the UK.
• Understanding of the transition challenges from oil and gas to a low carbon economy.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills in English; additional languages are a plus.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and legal research tools.
