About The Role

AEMO operates in a heavily regulated environment and the Legal Team, headed by the General Counsel, is a trusted adviser to the business, providing timely and well considered legal services and counsel.

This role will work closely with AEMO’s Gas Markets and Operations to support them in carrying out their responsibilities. Working with energy market and operations specialists, you will support regulatory change projects to address the challenges facing energy markets and improve outcomes for consumers. This work has impact – at a time of great change for the energy industry.

What You Will Be Doing

As part of AEMO’s Legal Team, the Senior Corporate Lawyer will provide regulatory and commercial legal services supporting the AEMO’s gas markets and operations teams. Key accountabilities include:
• Providing high quality advice on regulatory instruments (such as legislation, rules and procedures)
• Drafting and reviewing regulatory instruments (such as procedures under the rules)
• Supporting regulatory change projects to drive positive consumer outcomes, consistent with AEMO’s corporate plan and statutory obligations.
• Establishing effective relationships with internal stakeholders and collaborate to assess and provide high quality advice on regulatory compliance and draft documents.
• Drafting and negotiating agreements to support the business, including agreements contemplated under the rules and the procurement of consulting services.

What You Will Bring To The Role
• Eligibility to practice law in an Australian jurisdiction in which AEMO operates (current practising certificate)
• Strong knowledge and demonstrated experience in gas, applying legislation in a highly regulated sector (e.g., gas, electricity, telecommunications, health or government) 
• Experience in drafting regulatory instruments, preparing drafting instructions or legislative / regulatory instruments.
• Experience successfully working with regulatory bodies and government.
• A Bachelor of Laws/Juris Doctor with more than 5+ years PQE.
