Job Description

WBCSD is hiring a Senior Associate for its Climate Action team, focusing on avoided emissions and scaling low-carbon solutions. The role involves supporting workstreams, leading projects, and ensuring high member engagement within the Avoided Emissions track. This position aims to accelerate decarbonization efforts among member companies, contributing to WBCSD's vision of a sustainable future. The job is fully remote, allowing candidates to work from anywhere.

Job Overview

Safe Operating Space 1.5 (SOS 1.5) is WBCSD’s flagship program on Climate Action. 100+ member companies are working within four tracks to accelerate decarbonization of which Avoided Emissions is one.

WBCSD is seeking a Sr. Associate to work in the Climate Action team with a focus on avoided emissions and scaling low-carbon solutions (https://www.wbcsd.org/actions/avoided-emissions/). In this program we work with member companies to identify, assess, and scale climate solutions that accelerate systemic decarbonization. The objective is to support and enable our member companies to include an innovation, growth, and impact perspective into their sustainability strategies and drive their climate action journey. The position will report to the Senior Manager Avoided Emissions.

The work on avoided emissions and scaling of low-carbon solutions is one of the key action areas for the Climate Action Imperative at WBCSD. WBCSD’s work on this topic received high attention from policy, financial actors and standards bodies. The Guidance on Avoided Emissions was endorsed by the G7 Climate, Energy, and Environment ministers, and it was represented at various global events such as COP28, COP29, and London Climate Week. Close to 100 member companies from the business community are engaged in this work which makes it one of the largest programs at WBCSD. We offer a unique opportunity to shape the innovation and climate agendas of globally leading companies, align sectoral approaches in high-impact innovations to accelerate decarbonization, and unlock support from policy and finance to scale identified solutions.

Responsibilities and duties
• Support the workstreams and workstream leads of WBCSD’s Avoided Emissions track that covers Methodology, Implementation, and Finance & Policy
• Lead and/or support (sub-) projects within the workstream activities related to, e.g., sector-specific work, development of reports and guidance documents, member and stakeholder consultations
• Lead the process for avoided emissions use case review and publication, ensuring technical rigor and transparency of the cases including compliance with the existing WBCSD Guidance and relevant GHG accounting and innovation frameworks.
• Connect with WBCSD sector specialists to create a seamless member experience that factors in sector-specific projects and content and validate outputs with sectorial experts.
• Ensure high member engagement and retention, and connect with member companies in 1on1 sessions, workshops, group meetings, or break-outs to address recent avoided emissions and decarbonization challenges, capture feedback, and delineate recommendations for action.
• Support the delivery of online & in-person events that meet WBCSD member’s needs, across the three avoided emissions workstreams via presentation and panel preparation, participant briefings, hosting etc.

Qualifications, skills and experience
• A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree, or equivalent in natural science, business management, environmental engineering or sustainability.
• 3-6 years of experience in project delivery related to sustainability and/or decarbonization, working with formal and informal teams and taking full ownership of project deliverables.
• An understanding of the current “state of play” of global decarbonization frameworks, solutions, and standards, as well as the challenges of corporate decarbonization.
• Technical expertise in carbon accounting (Scope 1-3 accounting, lifecycle analysis, material flow analysis) and corporate environmental standards
• High passion to transform global economic systems and contribute to the acceleration of climate action through innovation
• Highly organized and proactive with the ability to effectively prioritize and work across multiple workstreams.
• Good team spirit and the ability to build, nurture and work effectively in teams of partners/stakeholders, able to interact with senior representatives of member companies.
• An action orientation with evidence of mobilizing stakeholders and overcoming barriers to deliver results.
• Excellent communication skills in English (spoken & written), strong presentation skills with the ability to adjust style of communication to suit audience.

The position is a full – time, fixed – term contract and is based in Amsterdam or London.
