DU Seasonal Wetland Ecology Technician

Duty Station: Statewide; Bismarck, North Dakota

Application Period: February – March 2025

Position Duration: April 1st 2025 – August 2025

Pay: $16/hr plus housing stipend

The Great Plains Regional Office of Ducks Unlimited, Inc. (DU) is seeking inquisitive, detail-oriented, and self-motivated applicants for a wetland ecology technician position located in North Dakota. The technician will be expected to split time between Bismarck and Jamestown. The incumbent will work under the direction of DU and USGS wetland scientists to complete research related to wetlands embedded in DU’s working lands programs. The successful candidate will be expected to participate in field work (water sampling, invertebrate collection, duck surveys), as well as laboratory processing of invertebrate samples.

The technician will be expected to work full-time from late March through August. Field work can be physically demanding. Applicants must be able to work in all weather for long periods of time often walking over rough and uneven terrain. Therefore, only enthusiastic and dedicated individuals should apply. A valid driver’s license, clean driving record, and drug screen are required.

Primary responsibilities:
• Assist DU’s science staff in wetland monitoring. Specific duties include:
• Collect wetland water samples, monitor wetland hydrology, conduct basic biological surveys (waterfowl, aquatic invertebrates, etc.).
• Lead laboratory processing of invertebrate samples under the supervision of USGS scientists.

Required skills and education:
• A minimum one year of advanced education in a requisite field (wildlife, agriculture, agronomy, range science, natural resources) or a closely related field.
• Familiarity with basic collection of scientific data.
• Excellent communication and organization skills.
• Ability to work well as a part of a team and independently.
• Excellent technology and computer skills and a basic understanding of Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and ArcGIS.
