Job Description

General Motors is seeking a Scope 3 Decarbonization Lead in Warren, MI, for a hybrid role requiring in-office presence three times a week. The position involves managing Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions, developing strategies to reduce carbon footprints, and collaborating with stakeholders. Key responsibilities include data analysis, reporting, compliance, and education on sustainability practices. Candidates should have a Bachelor's degree and a strong understanding of emissions accounting.
Location: Warren, MI (This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Warren, Michigan three times per week, at minimum)

Overview: General Motors has a vision of Zero Crashes, Zero Emissions, and Zero Congestion, and your work in this role will be a key piece of this vision. As part of the Battery, Propulsion, and Sustainability organization, the Scope 3 Decarbonization Lead will champion the corporate Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions profile and guide the achievement of GM’s Science Based Targets and Carbon Neutral goals. Scope 3 emissions are indirect greenhouse gas emissions that occur in a company’s value chain, including both upstream and downstream activities. These emissions are not directly controlled by the company but are a result of its operations. This is your opportunity to grow into and contribute to some of the most prominent and important themes of our age: climate change and sustainability.

In this role, you should have a strong understanding of the complexities of scope 3 emissions accounting in line with the GHG Protocol. You will be expected to develop a systemic way of accounting for scope 3 data globally and be able to grow that data set into an actionable strategy through pricing, partnership, and strategic initiatives to reduce carbon emissions. The Scope 3 Decarbonization Lead will need to be able to work cross functionally throughout GM and with our suppliers to drive change and reductions. You will lead the understanding and managing of the indirect environmental impacts of a company’s operations throughout its value chain.

Roles/Responsibilities: Own all 15 categories of Scope 3 Emissions which includes tracking and calculating status:
• Purchased Goods and Services
• Capital Goods
• Fuel- and Energy-Related Activities (those not included in Scope 1 or Scope 2)
• Upstream Transportation and Distribution
• Waste Generated in Operations
• Business Travel
• Employee Commuting
• Upstream Leased Assets
• Downstream Transportation and Distribution
• Processing of Sold Products
• Use of Sold Products
• End-of-Life Treatment of Sold Products
• Downstream Leased Assets
• Franchises
• Investments
• Data Collection and Analysis: Gathering and analyzing data related to Scope 3 emissions from suppliers, logistics, product use, and end-of-life disposal.
• Reporting and Compliance: Preparing reports on Scope 3 emissions for regulatory compliance, sustainability reporting, and stakeholder communication.
• Collaboration with Stakeholders: Working with suppliers, customers, and other stakeholders to identify opportunities for reducing Scope 3 emissions and improving sustainability practices.
• Strategy Development: Developing and implementing strategies to minimize Scope 3 emissions, including initiatives for sustainable sourcing, product design, and waste management.
• Monitoring and Improvement: Continuously monitoring Scope 3 emissions and assessing the effectiveness of reduction strategies, making recommendations for improvements.
• Education and Training: Providing training and resources to employees and stakeholders on the importance of managing Scope 3 emissions and best practices for sustainability.

Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree
• Understanding of US energy markets
• Solid time and project management skills
• Strong collaboration and communication skills
• Fast learner, capable of quickly gaining domain expertise in the highly complex climate and sustainability markets

What will give you an edge:
• Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Sustainability Science, or Environmental related programs (Climate, etc.)
• 5+ years of experience in engineering or energy field
• Expert knowledge of Scope 3 methodology and familiarity with performing and reporting these calculations for corporations
• Knowledge of GHG Protocol
• Experience with Science Based Targets and/or ISO Net Zero Guidelines
• Strong sense of teamwork and shared achievement of team targets
