Job Description

Carbyon is seeking a Safety Officer in Eindhoven, Netherlands, to drive the safety agenda in a fast-paced tech start-up focused on climate change solutions. The role involves ensuring compliance with safety regulations, conducting risk assessments, and fostering a culture of safety within R&D teams. Responsibilities include safety audits, maintaining safety documentation, and implementing safety management systems as the company transitions towards operational scaling.
Climate change is real and we need to act fast. Our purpose is to restore the carbon balance in our atmosphere. We believe it’s important to have a positive impact on society, the economy, and the climate. Are you ready to join us on our mission? 🌎

Role

Currently the Carbyon team is close to 50 driven and intrinsically motivated individuals. While the majority works on either the development of our sorbent, or the machine around it, we can assure you that the focus of the team is still R&D-heavy. However, gradually, we’re moving into a more operational environment. Think building prototypes, preparing for manufacturing and such.

And that’s where you come in as a Safety Officer. Overarchingly, it’s your responsibility to drive the safety agenda, ensuring that safety is embedded in the way of working and thinking. As this is your main focus, it obviously results in a wide scope. It’s about being compliant with safety regulations, preventively conducting risk assessments, fostering a culture of safety (just to name a few). All of this takes place in a fast-paced tech start-up environment which is preparing for scale.

That’s also where you’ll experience one of your key challenges. On the one hand you’ll notice that our people eagerly want to develop our prototypes rapidly. And as you know, with speed comes safety risks. So it's your challenge to find the balance between the urge of development projects while working safely. Initially, your role will predominantly focus on ensuring a safe R&D-environment. However, as we’re ramping up the operational side of things, it’s highly likely that your role will branch out to the operations side over time.

Responsibilities
As we’ve tried to express, as a Safety Officer in our environment, it’s challenging to secure safety given the speed of innovation, the constant changes in processes, the continuous introduction of new materials, equipment and so forth. While it’s up to you to act as an internal entrepreneur so to say, we’d like to give you some high-over responsibilities acting as your compass in this role of Safety Officer.

Safety Compliance and Auditing
• Act as the Prevention Employee.
• Ensure compliance with local, national, and, when applicable, international safety regulations.
• Conduct regular safety audits, inspections, and hazard assessments across R&D teams.
• Maintain and update safety documentation, ensuring compliance with both internal and external standards.

Development and Maintenance of Safety Management System (toolbox and procedure)
• Use digital tools and systems to monitor safety metrics in real time, ensuring timely reporting and analysis of incidents, near misses, and unsafe conditions.
• Prepare detailed safety reports and performance evaluations, highlighting areas for improvement.
• Perform and register risk assessment, RCA and alike.
• Report on safety incidents and follow up actions until completion.
• Register hazardous chemicals.
• Register training matrix.

Risk Identification and Mitigation
• Perform risk assessments on new and existing processes, equipment, prototypes and materials used in the R&D-environment.
• Work with the R&D-teams to proactively identify and mitigate risks as new prototypes, equipment, and processes are introduced.
• Develop and implement safety mitigation plans for high-risk activities.

Safety Training and Awareness
• Design and deliver regular safety training programs tailored to specific needs, including the handling of hazardous materials, equipment operation, and emergency procedures.
• Foster a safety-first culture by conducting safety briefings and toolbox talks to keep safety top-of-mind among the teams.
• Provide guidance on the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and enforce adherence to safety standards.

Emergency Preparedness and Response
• Develop and maintain emergency response plans, including procedures for chemical spills, equipment failures, fire, and other emergencies.
• Conduct regular safety drills (e.g., fire, evacuation, and spill response) and ensure the whole team is familiar with their role during emergencies.
• Act as the primary point of contact during safety incidents, leading investigations, and ensuring corrective actions are implemented.

Safety Leadership and Collaboration
• Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and scientists to integrate safety into project timelines without compromising development speed.
• Provide safety leadership during design reviews and project planning to ensure safety considerations are embedded proactively.
• Liaise with cross-functional teams to ensure alignment of safety goals with business and development objectives.

Continuous Improvement
• Promote continuous improvement of safety protocols by evaluating and implementing new tools, technologies, and best practices.
• Identify opportunities for streamlining safety procedures to ensure they are compatible with the fast-paced nature of development without sacrificing quality or compliance.
• Stay up-to-date with the latest industry trends and regulatory changes in safety and occupational health.

Why join us?

We are a purpose-driven team of international engineers, researchers, and business professionals. We do not get easily discouraged and we join forces to ensure our dream comes true. At the heart of it all, people are inspired by our purpose: reversing climate change!
