Job Description

Leaf Ninjas Inc. is hiring a Restoration Crew Lead in Calgary, AB, to oversee ecological restoration projects. The role involves managing a crew of 4-8, ensuring safety and compliance with bioengineering standards. Responsibilities include installation and maintenance of vegetation and irrigation systems, team training, and project management. This seasonal position requires interprovincial deployment and leadership in various restoration tasks from April to December.
We are looking for crew leaders to execute our requirements for installation and
maintenance on our ecological restoration projects. This person will be responsible to
meet industry/municipal standards on bioengineering projects in the GCA and other
remote locations in western Canada. They will manage a 4-8 person crew and assume
responsibility for their safety, procedural compliance, and daily organization.

Position Title: Restoration Crew Foreman

Job Function: Leadership on all installation and maintenance scopes. Install vegetation,
solar powered irrigation systems, erosion/sediment control and other bioengineering
elements. Safety program compliance and team accountability oversight.

Job Type: Seasonal (April – December)
Purpose: The Restoration Crew Foreman will lead our ecological restoration teams and utilize
plant material and soil bioengineering techniques to repair erosion, strengthen ecology,
revegetate, and create habitat in riparian areas.
They will provide leadership, training and daily supervision of restoration crews on a
variety of restoration, maintenance and bioengineering projects.

Status: Reports to Project Manager

Location: Rockyview County, interprovincial deployment required

Pay Level: Level 2

Duties and Responsibilities:

INSTALLATION
• Collect and store live plant material
• Handle and install erosion/sediment control materials
• Install soil bioengineering elements
• Planting native vegetation (trees, plugs and shrubs) to spec
• Install/repair perimeter fencing
• Solar Irrigation system installation, maintenance and repair
• Pre-season preparation of irrigation systems and materials. Post-season

takedown and processing of systems
• Prepare sites for planting
• Carry out maintenance and monitoring scopes as necessary
• Carry out other project requirements as per Crew Foreman/Project Manager

LEADERSHIP AND COMMUNICATION
• Organize, lead and participate in regular department meetings
• Provide training and guidance for your assigned Restoration crew
• Ensure that crews and subcontractors are compliant with safety and

environmental policy
• Regularly complete Field Level Hazards Assessments PRIOR to entering a job site
• Report and record all safety incidents involving yourself, subcontractors or

technicians
• Become familiar with all PPE requirements on each job site, regularly maintain

and organize PPE and safety equipment
• Perform daily field logs
• Correspond with the Project Manager to ensure production rates and other

progress metrics are being met
• Provide project feedback (timelines, deadlines, progress, reflective) to Project

Manager and COO
• Correspond with Technical Support to ensure that solar irrigation systems are

functioning as planned and troubleshoot as necessary
• Respond to emails, text messages and phone calls in a timely fashion
• Ensure confirmations for completion of work are consistently provided to Project

Managers
• Perform Maintenance logs as necessary
• Minor client facing responsibilities are expected dependant on project
• Review department financials yearly with team

OTHER DUTIES
• Transport crews and materials to site as needed
• Ensure that provided vehicle is operated in a safe and respectful manner
• Correspond with Resource Manager when regular maintenance, cleaning and

repairs are required on the equipment
• Clean, organize and maintain tool condition. Report lost or damaged equipment

and PPE to Equipment Manager
• Tool rentals, returns, purchase as necessary
• Keep up to date on relevant training

QUALIFICATIONS
• Minimum 2 years experience in landscaping, tree planting or forestry
• Minimum 2 seasons of experience supervising small team-oriented crews
• Experience with industrial field work an asset (minesite, oil and gas)
• Ecology or Horticultural credentials an asset
• High-quality plug planting skills
• Ability to work away from home for up to one month
• Experience using hand saws and pruning shears
• Backcountry driving experience
• Experience working outdoors in challenging weather
• Has a passion for the outdoors and environmental stewardship
• Has an interest and curiosity for horticulture and restoration
• Physical abilities must include: heavy lifting, resilience to cold and wet conditions,

athletic level fitness, can travel by foot for long distances over uneven terrain
• Strong knowledge of irrigation system design
• Willingness to work and travel alone
• Willingness to learn and grow your career

Wage: $26.00 – $32.00
