Job Description

Nanyang Technological University is seeking a Research Fellow in Weather and Climate Extremes to work on a MOE-funded project focused on characterizing compound hydroclimate events in Southeast Asia. The role involves developing a database, advancing scientific understanding of hydroclimate processes, and assessing methodologies for event characterization. Candidates should hold a PhD in a relevant field, have experience with hydro-climatological data analysis, and proficiency in programming languages like R or MATLAB.
The Civil and Environmental Engineering at Nanyang Technological University is searching for PhD holders to work in a newly awarded MOE-funded research project on characterizing and understanding compound hydroclimate events. Such events involve co-occurrences of single hydroclimate extremes amongst episodes of heavy rainfall and wind, flood occurrences, and storm surges. Such compound events have the potential to amplify the damages from single event extremes. Understanding of such events will contribute towards planning for safe and sustainable cities of the future.
Job Description*:
- Develop and assemble a database of compound hydroclimate events for Southeast Asia using public datasets on single event occurrences- Advance scientific understanding of the physical processes driving these compound events and their potential changes under climate change- Reporting to project PI and Co-PI in the Tier II project:

- Assess suitability of hydroclimate extremes for inclusion into the database of compound events
- Assess various frequency analysis methodologies for suitability in characterizing occurrence of compound events
- Document and present the progress and results of research

Job Requirements:
- Strong PhD degree in an engineering or science related field with an emphasis on statistical methods applied to natural phenomena- Demonstrated ability to independently source and process large hydro-climatological databases (e.g., reanalysis, CMIP, and CORDEX)- Experience in analysing hydro-climatological data under extreme value analysis framework- Proficiency in data analysis and data mining using high-level scientific programming languages (e.g., R, MATLAB), working with large hydrometeorological databases; knowledge of machine learning algorithms and GIS software will be a strong plus- Good publication record as first or corresponding author
