The Research Associate position at the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS) in Hobart involves preparing a publication on the seasonal evolution of the surface mixed layer in East Antarctic polynyas. Research Associate – Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS), HobartResponsibilities:
Prepare a paper for publication which quantifies the seasonal evolution of the surface mixed layer in response to air-sea fluxes and sea-ice growth and decay in East Antarctic polynyas.
Extend recent analyses within the Prydz Bay region across East Antarctic polynyas to examine the regional (spatial and temporal) variability in seasonal DSW formation, including the role and contribution from less active and/or smaller polynyas.
Deliver research outputs within agreed scope, timetable, and budgetary milestones of the project.
Disseminate research results in high impact, peer-reviewed literature, at national and international meetings, and through seminars to colleagues and collaborators.
Minimum Requirements:
A PhD in a relevant area of science (e.g. physical oceanography, climate science or other quantitative marine science discipline).
Excellent understanding of ocean dynamics and the ocean’s role in climate.
High level quantitative skills, as demonstrated through analysis and interpretation of complex observational data and/or numerical simulations.
Demonstrated ability to carry out original, independent, and innovative research with a minimum of direct supervision.
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a research team covering multiple disciplines and to achieve collective as well as individual outcomes.
Excellent written and oral communication skills suited for science specialist and generalist user groups.
Demonstrated track record of publishing research results in the peer-reviewed literature.
Remuneration:
Appointment to this role will be at either:
Academic Level A and will have a total remuneration package of up to $108,076 comprising base salary within the range of $71,433 to $92,373 plus 17% superannuation OR
Academic Level B and will have a total remuneration package of up to $133,842 comprising base salary within the range of $98,537 to $114,395 plus 17% superannuation.
