Job Description

Oak Ridge National Laboratory is seeking a Research Associate for the Power Systems Resilience Group to support R&D in electric grid modeling, data analytics, and EMT modeling. Responsibilities include reliability assessments, hydropower studies, and developing models for grid resources. Candidates should have a Ph.D. in electrical engineering or a relevant MS with experience, and skills in programming and power systems software. The position is based in Knoxville, TN.

Overview:

The Power Systems Resilience (PSR) Group in the Electrification and Energy Infrastructure Division (EEID) within the Energy Science and Technology Directorate (ESTD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking a Research Associate to support R&D in the areas of bulk power systems infrastructure modeling, grid data analytics, & EMT modeling. Selection will be based on qualifications, relevant experience, skills, and education. You should be highly self-motivated and independent in conducting work under general guidance and is expected to prepare diagrams and documentation for internal use as well as supporting scientific publication and work to sponsors.

The PSR Group supports the energy security and prosperity mission of the Energy Department (DOE) through transformative science and technology solutions, including research supporting the Office of Electricity (OE), Office of Cybersecurity, Energy Security and Emergency Response (CESER) and Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) on the integration of new technologies, identifying and validating new ways of using existing and emerging grid assets to ensure grid reliability, grid resilience, environmental stewardship, and affordability of energy supplies. The PSR group focuses on electric grid modeling, energy security analysis, protection systems R&D, dynamic/transient modeling and analysis with power electronics-based devices, and system operation and control R&D of bulk power systems with power electronics-based devices.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:
• Support research in bulk grid infrastructure modeling, including major event-type reliability assessments (eg, Hurricane impacts).
• Work closely with research staff for hydropower evaluation studies
• Assist research teams on grid infrastructure analysis
• Develop electromagnetic transient (EMT) models for transmission or distribution grids, inverter-based resources (e.g. solar PV inverters), synchronous generators, loads, etc.
• Assist in research proposal writing

Basic Qualifications:
• A Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering, or a MS in electrical engineering with at least two years of experience.
• Expertise in power systems and power electronics.
• Experience in C/C++, Matlab, and Python programming.
• Experience in power systems software such as PSCAD, PSS/e.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience in extreme event modeling.
• Experience with marine-hydro or hydropower modeling.
• Experience with grid data analysis
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
• Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever-changing needs.
