About the position
The New York Times is seeking a meteorologist or reporter with experience in covering weather events to enhance its coverage of day-to-day weather and extreme weather phenomena. This role is crucial in guiding the Times audience through various weather events, including hurricanes, severe storms, droughts, and heat waves, across multiple platforms. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to pursue enterprise stories that illuminate weather trends and explain complex weather concepts in a clear and engaging manner. This hybrid position is based in either Los Angeles or San Francisco, California, requiring regular attendance in the office each week as per departmental guidance. The role also involves a commitment to work one weekend day per week and occasional evenings, reflecting the dynamic nature of weather reporting. In this position, you will collaborate with the weather data team to collect, analyze, forecast, and present both real-time and historical weather data. You will contribute to the newsroom's weather coverage, preparing forecasts and writing for live blogs during significant weather events. Additionally, you will work closely with graphics editors to create clear visual displays of forecast data. While you will have the autonomy to publish independently, you should also be enthusiastic about collaborating in small groups, particularly with journalists who possess different skill sets. A key aspect of this role is to think creatively about how to better serve the West Coast readership, demonstrating a strong commitment to the journalistic independence and mission of The New York Times to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
Responsibilities

Requirements
• At least 2 years of experience reporting on or writing about extreme weather events.

• Proven track record of covering breaking news.

• Demonstrated ability to guide weather coverage based on forecasts and historical data.

• Genuine interest and experience in working with and explaining weather or climate data to a general audience.

• Knowledge of a variety of weather-data resources.

• Experience and preference for working collaboratively on a multidisciplinary team of data and visual journalists.
Nice-to-haves
• Certification in meteorology, atmospheric science, or climate-related research, or an interest in obtaining such certification.
