• Geology Trainee - $25.05 per hour
• Geology Associate - $27.62 per hour
• Professional Environmental Geologist - $66,560.00 annually
• Salary can vary depending upon education, experience, or qualifications.

Position Summary & Responsibilities

Position Summary:

The position (K0234758) Conduct inspections of facilities containing UST systems to ensure compliance with all applicable regulations and guidelines, including the revised EPA/KDHE regulations planned for implementation in 2019.Provide technical assistance to owners and operators of UST systems concerning operation, maintenance, and compliance of Federal and State regulations.Inspects work performed by outside agencies and contractors to ensure proper application and compliance with applicable laws, rules and regulations.Coordinates and reports progress or noncompliance of UST system installations, repairs or upgrades to the BER staff that administer the program.When needed, provide recommendations on improvements to the existing UST system or to systems being installed or upgraded.

Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:

Acts as field geologist on investigative projects including logging test drilling and monitoring points where subsurface contamination is documented or suspected.Perform comprehensive inspections of regulated facilities with above ground and underground fuel storage tanks (ASTs/USTs) that have experienced product release and resulting contamination of the subsurface. Provide geologic field oversight and project management and consultation to professional consultants and contractors conducting Limited Site Assessments and Kansas Risk-Based Corrective Action assessments of subsurface soil and groundwater conditions, remediation system installations and operation, groundwater monitoring, and other activities associated with chemically contaminated sites.The geologic oversight and consultation is performed to ensure all work is being conducted in conformance with the approved work plan for subsurface characterization.Oversight may include split sampling, verification sampling, and observation and documentation of consultant work activities.Review work plans, system specifications, and proposals for investigation, remedial action and/or monitoring for completeness and accuracy for contaminated properties.When needed, provide recommendations to Bureau of Environmental Remediation (BER) project managers for more comprehensive investigation or expansion of the scope of work of investigations

Responds to spills, releases, and discharges of regulated and hazardous substances that may threaten or harm public health and/or the environment.Responses may be considered “emergency” in nature and may occur outside of normal business hours.Serves as the lead worker on spill and emergency response when the supervisor is absent or not available.Provides consultation and instruction to industry representatives and clean-up contractors concerning containment of spilled substances and remediation of impacted material.Consults with supervisor, BER and Bureau of Waste Management (BWM) staff with respect to thorough and timely cleanup, including proper disposal of affected media.Periodically reviews the spill database to determine if past spills require further action prior to being closed.Tracks and records status of spills monthly and quarterly to supervisor.

Qualifications
• Education:
• Bachelor’s Degree in Geology, Hydrogeology, Earth Science, Geoscience, or other related field.
• Licensing & Certification:
• Valid Driver's License - Incumbent is required to have and maintain a valid driver's license when operating a state vehicle, a private vehicle, or a rental vehicle for the benefit of the State.
• Minimum Qualifications:
• Geology Trainee
• Bachelor’s Degree in Geology, Hydrogeology, Earth Science, Geoscience, or other related field.
• Within 6 months of hire, incumbent must pass a physical which certifies the individual can work in the necessary protective gear.
• Incumbent is required to work towards professional geologist licensure and ultimately maintaining that professional geologist licensure while in this position.
• Geology Associate
• Bachelor’s Degree in Geology, Hydrogeology, Earth Science, Geoscience, or other related field.
• Valid Intern Geologist or Fundamentals of Geology Certificate recognized by the Kansas Board of Technical Professions.
• Within 6 months of hire, incumbent must pass a physical which certifies the individual can work in the necessary protective gear.
• Incumbent is required to work towards professional geologist licensure and ultimately maintaining that professional geologist licensure while in this position.
• Professional Environmental Geologist
• Bachelor’s Degree in Geology, Hydrogeology, Earth Science, Geoscience, or other related field.
• Valid Professional Geologist license recognized by the Kansas Board of Technical Professions.
• Incumbent is required to continue to maintain their professional geologist licensure at this level while in this position.
• Within 6 months of hire, incumbent must pass a physical which certifies the individual can work in the necessary protective gear.
• Preferred Qualifications:
• Microsoft Office and Lotus Notes
• Proofreading, editing, attention to detail
• Sampling, data logging
• Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
• Ability to use personal protective equipment
• Ability to work with a diverse group of people
• ARC GIS
• Computer Skills - Word, Excel, Power Point, Access
• Length in Years and kind:0-2 years
• Post-Offer, Pre-employment Requirements:
• Must pass a physical which certifies the individual can work in the necessary personal protective equipment. Job does require physical activities involved with the essential functions of the job.
