Job Description

The City of Hamilton, Ohio is seeking a Registered Environmental Health Specialist In Training to enforce public health and nuisance ordinances. Responsibilities include conducting inspections, evaluating food service operations, investigating foodborne illness outbreaks, and educating the public on health practices. The role requires collaboration with city departments and public interaction. Candidates must be licensed as an REHSIT in Ohio and hold a relevant Bachelor's degree.

The City of Hamilton is an EEO & AAE. Minorities and women are encouraged to apply.This position involves technical work enforcing the City’s public health and nuisance ordinances. The work is performed under the general direction and supervision of the City’s Senior Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS). While an employee in this class does not supervise the work of others, the nature of the work performed requires that an employee in this class establish and maintain close cooperative working relationships with other city departments and the general public.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Conducts inspections and makes required follow-up actions to enforce the State of Ohio Food Safety Code Chapter 3717-1 of the Ohio Administrative Code, including implementation of hazard analysis critical control points as required;Evaluates food service operations and retail food establishments into risk categories and discusses the evaluations and implications of Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) rules with each owner and/or operator;Conducts inspections of food service operations and retail food establishments to ensure safe handling of foods and educates operators on safe handling practices and food recalls in progress;Conducts temporary food service operation and retail food establishment inspections during festivals and other special events to reduce the number of food borne illness outbreaks and other hazards to the public health;Investigates food borne illness outbreaks and issues appropriate public warnings;Makes annual environmental inspections and assessments of jails and lock-up facilities and communicates with the County Sheriff concerning adequate means which can be taken with regard to needed or required improvements;Educates property owners and industrial complex managers in the proper use and storage of any items and or equipment that might attract mosquitoes and/or rodents;Enforces rabies control program;Administers and enforces state laws pertaining to recreational vehicle and camping facilities;Conducts swimming pool, spa and special use pool inspections and consults with swimming pool, spa and special use pool owners and/or operators to assure good operation and to minimize the potential for disease transmission;Educates body art operators concerning the code and related health risks associated with such equipment;Conducts inspections and makes enforcement for all State Mandated Environmental Programs including school environments, private water systems, sewage treatment systems, gray water recycling systems, solid waste, smoking complaints, etc.Implements the City’s health and nuisance ordinances and codes as needed;Participates in work related to the health department’s accreditation program, including but not limited to the community health assessment and the community health improvement plan as directed;Participates in emergency preparedness planning as directed;Attends meetings, conferences and workshops as requested and authorized;Performs related work as required.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
Minimum Qualifications Must be a Registered Environmental Health Specialist in Training (REHSIT) licensed in the State of Ohio; and Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor of Sciencedegree in a natural science or related field or have 30 semester hours of science or math coursework in your Bachelor of Science degree (science may be from biology, chemistry, physics, botany, geology or microbiology); andPossession of a valid Driver's License. (Will be verified for finalists)Preferred Qualifications Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor of Science degree in environmental science.
